Pamela Helen Stephenson is a New Zealand-born psychologist, performer, and writer who is now a resident in both in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

However, she is best known for her work as an actress and comedian during the 1980s.

She has written several books which include a biography of her husband Sir Billy Connolly and presented a psychology-based interview show called Shrink Rap on British and Australian television.

1. Pamela Stephenson was Raped at the Age of 16

According to her own autobiography, Pamela was raped at the age of 16 while she was living in Australia by a 35-year-old heroin addict and contracted an STD as a consequence.

However, she concealed the fact but was expelled from her home by her parents once her medical condition was known.

“I remember the feeling well because I still experience it every time someone rejects me even in some relatively small way.”

2. She is a US licensed Psychologist

Pamela is a US licensed psychologist who practices and publishes under the name Pamela Stephenson Connolly.

However, in her private practice Stephenson in Beverly Hills she provided mental health care to adult individuals and couples for a range of psychological complaints.

Her professional specialties include human sexuality. She was the founder and president of the Los Angeles Sexuality Center an online sexual research engine that operated for five years until she moved to New York.

3. Pamela Stephenson was an adjunct Professor at California Graduate Institute

Pamela was an adjunct professor at the California Graduate Institute now a part of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology for six years.

She taught Human Sexuality and Sex Therapy, Advanced Human Sexuality, and Sex Therapy, and Clinical Practicum in Sex Therapy.

She also taught clinical hypnosis at California Graduate Institute. Moreover, she received her Ph.D. in 1996 and then in 2009 received an Honorary Doctorate in Science from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen for her contributions to the field of Human Sexuality.

4. She sold her house in Hollywood and spent a year on a Sailing Cruise

In late 2004 Pamela sold her house in Hollywood and spent a year on a sailing cruise around the South Pacific Ocean following the path of Robert Louis Stevenson and Fanny Stevenson.

However, she said she was inspired by Fanny who had convinced her husband to travel to the tropics for the sake of his fragile health. 

Her travels were documented in her book Treasure Islands and the boat she bought was renamed “Takapuna” after her birthplace.

Furthermore, a year later she went on another voyage to discover the fate of an ancestor a sailing captain who had disappeared in the South Seas.

The voyage was the subject of a documentary for Australian Television Murder or Mutiny.

5. Pamela Stephenson was in the 1987 United Kingdom General election

In the 1987 United Kingdom general election Stephenson was a candidate in the Windsor and Maidenhead constituency.

However, Windsor and Maidenhead was a county constituency in Berkshire. The constituency was created at the February 1974 general election and abolished at the 1997 general election when it was replaced by the new separate constituencies of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Moreover, Pamela vied on behalf of the Blancmange Throwers Party and she came sixth with 328 votes.  

6. She formed a Dance Company in collaboration with Braz Dos Santos

Pamela formed a dance company in collaboration with Brazillian Lambazouk dancer Braz Dos Santos.

They wrote and produced a dance drama stage production called Brazouka. Harley Medcalf was the lead producer and Arlene Phillips’s director.

The biographical show told the story of Dos Santos and his dancing and he performed in the show.

Moreover, it premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2014 and toured South Africa and Australia through January 2015.

7. Pamela Stephenson has published Seven Books

As an author, Pamela Connolly has published seven books and her biography Billy topped best-seller lists in Britain and several other countries.

Her book Head Case describes self-help approaches for a variety of mental health problems.

However, she has been a regular contributor to Psychologies magazine where she writes a column on relationships for The Australian Women’s Weekly and has a weekly sex therapy column in The Guardian written under the name Pamela Stephenson Connolly.

8. She has Campaigned to Raise Awareness of Food Additives and Colors

From the 1980s Pamela campaigned to raise awareness of food additives and colors, particularly in children’s confectionery.

She appeared on the daily variety show Midday with Ray Martin and painted a picture using colors she extracted from children’s lollies in order to demonstrate how many are contained in them.

She became involved in the Parents for Safe Food Movement. In addition, due to her activism, she traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo with the international medical aid charity Merlin to meet the survivors of sexual gender-based violence.  

9. Pamela Stephenson’s Comedian Career started after she left Australia

Pamela’s own career as a comedian came about after she left Australia to find success in the U.K as an actress.

However, it was not long before her talent was recognized and in April 1979 viewers turned on their television sets to watch the first episode of the BBC series Not the Nine O’Clock News starring Pamela Stephenson alongside Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, and Griff Rhys Jones.

Pamela’s great sense of humor and her ability to warm funny, as well as sexy on-screen, was a unique combination making her one of the first comedians to gain equal credit alongside men in a television show.
