Mahurangi Harbour is a drowned river valley in New Zealand’s Auckland Region. It was also named Kiahow by the early settling communities. It stretches on the northeastern coast of the region, an area with a beehive of activities.

The harbor is famous for its sandy beaches and rocky platforms. It is home to the Ngati Rongo aboriginal people who settled in Auckland from the period spanning the 17^th to the 20^th century.

Some river sources that feed into the harbor, directly and indirectly, include Mahurangi River, Duck Creek, Hepburn Creek, Dyers Creek, and Te Kapa River. The harbour acts as a protective barrier of the body of water emanating from the Mahurangi River.

1. Mahurangi Harbour Is A Natural Harbour

The natural port was formed by activity caused by the Last Glacial Period that changed the geographical composition of the region. Findings show that sedimentation increased around the area resulting in harbor formation. The sedimentation continues to rise as the use of the land around the harbor continues to change with increasing human activities.

Scholars trace the natural alteration and creation of rocks that formed the Mahurangi harbour to about 7,200 years ago. The harbor is a historical marvel that began formation due to natural factors such as the last glacial maximum.

The natural factors resulted in increased plektonic activity and a change in the region’s composition of rocks and soil. It also triggered a series of geographical events in the area resulting in the harbor formation.

 3. The Mahurangi Harbour Flooded Valley Formed Due To Rising Sea Levels

The Mahurangi harbor was a forested valley before morphing into stream paths and waterways during the glacial period. The glacial periods that extended over centuries had a compounding effect on the environment as they resulted in rising sea levels across the globe.

The increasing sea levels around the region led to increased floodings that completely drowned and submerged what was once a forested valley at the coast. The weathering and erosion of soil and rock within the valley fostered the harbor formation.

The Mahurangi Harbor, which is shallow by nature, originates from the tidal estuary of the Mahurangi River. The increase in sedimentation around the Auckland region has also contributed to its shallowness. The tidal nature of the estuary has contributed to the ideal conditions that have fostered the harbor’s formation.

 The sheltered estuary provides the perfect wind conditions for docking and has promoted the development of settlements.

5. The Mahurangi Harbour Is A Hub For Private Pleasure Craft

The sheltered nature of the harbor, given the raised forested area surrounding it, provides the perfect grounds for hosting leisure activities. It provides necessary anchorage for private pleasure craft activities throughout the year when the weather and seasons are perfect. These crafts span from privately owned fishing boats to yachts, motorboats, and canal boats.

The harbor and its forest cover are home to a variety of flora and fauna. Some of the animals and plants encompass aboriginal wading and forest birds and expansive coastal vegetation filled with indigenous trees and vegetation.

The harbor is also home to various benthic communities, such as crabs, lobsters, shrimps and barnacles. The estuary habitat is conducive to sea life, given that sea animals often prefer to occupy the substrates at the bottom of the water bodies.

The water species directly add ecological value to the harbor by maintaining water and sediment quality.

7. The Economy Of Mahurangi Harbour Is Valued At Over $600 Million

Mahurangi Harbor hosts a large community of settlements. This is attributed the vast array of economic activities fostered by the harbor, including shipping and logistics, fishing, leisure water activities, and sports such as outrigger canoeing. The prevalence of these economic activities has resulted in the harbor having a GDP valued between $200 million and $700 million.

8. The Mahurangi Harbour Opens Up Into The Iconic Hauraki Gulf

The harbor is a unique habitat in that many aboriginal and endangered animal and plant species exist. Southern right whale is among the most iconic of the species at the Mahuragi Harbour. The whales, rarely spotted on the mainland, occasionally use the bay to rest as a breeding ground for calving.

The whales have hugely contributed to the region’s ecological value and the economy as they attract tourists from all over the world. Changing global temperatures and global warming have restricted their movement and migration. This has prompted the local communities and authorities to value and protect them

Mahurangi harbor is home to various communities. They consist of aboriginal groups that inhabited the area centuries ago. Other communities settled in the region for various reasons.
