On May 12, 1975, Jonah Tali Lomu was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He was the child of Polynesian Maori immigrants of Tongan origin. The athlete spent the majority of his youth with his parents in a low-income district in the south of the New Zealand metropolis, although briefly living with his aunt and uncle in the Tonga archipelago.
2. He started his Rugby career at 14 years
The sportsman started playing rugby professionally when he was 14 years old. He played a game with Eric Rush who is a New Zealand sevens star. The star was impressed with Lomu’s skills that he invited him to a Sevens tournament in Singapore.
He was then introduced to the rugby union through a tournament that was held in Te Kuiti. While starting in his career, he was in the forwards as an openside flanker and he sometimes played on the blindside.

But he got a call from the manager of the New Zealand team asking him to sign up for a friendly game against France, which would be his rugby debut. He had no idea that would soon come and surpass all other rugby greats.
6. He suffered health problems in the course of his professional career

After having an active career for 8 years after making his debut in the field of rugby, Jonah Lomu was diagnosed with nephritic syndrome and kidney problems to the extent that he required a transplant. This must have been hard for him as he was a healthy person.
Many people wanted to donate to Lomu the kidney he needed, but as the player himself stated, he did not want to skip the transplant waiting list simply because he was well-known. His long wait came to an end in 2004 when Grant Kereama, a friend and radio broadcaster, volunteered to donate his kidney. After receiving a replacement kidney and recovering, Lomu was ready to play rugby again after a two-year absence.
7. Awards
The player had a successful career that feature awards and achievements. In 1995, he was named the player of the tournament in the rugby World Cup. This was great as he has just started out in his career a year before. In 1998, he won a gold medal in the Commonwealth games that were held in Kuala Lumpur where he was representing New Zealand in the Sevens Rugby Event.
Furthermore, the player was ranked number 19 in UK’s greatest sporting moments. He was also the youngest player to score twelve test match tries in a year.
8. He was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit
