Inderbir Singh “Ish” Sodhi is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for Northern Districts in domestic cricket and the New Zealand national side in all formats. He was born on 31 October 1992  in Ludhiana, India. Sodhi is therefore of Punjabi origin. When he was four years old, he and his family relocated to Papatoetoe, New Zealand. He graduated from Papatoetoe High School.

1. He ranked no. 1 for T20l bowlers

In January 2018, he jumped to No. 1 in the T20I bowlers’ rankings, up from No. 10 after the previous year.

Sodhi rose from tenth to first place, marking a personal milestone in his career by topping the bowlers’ rankings for the first time. The wrist-spinner scored 70 points for his performance, putting him seven points ahead of Pakistan’s second-ranked Imad Wasim. Rashid Khan of Afghanistan is rated third, barely two points behind his Asian counterpart.

2. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2018–19 Plunket Shield season

The Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s domestic first-class cricket competition, celebrated its 90th season in 2018-19. It lasted from October 2018 through March 2019. Unlike the previous season, the tournament included eight rounds of matches rather than 10. The reigning champions were Central Districts.  However, Sodhi is the leading wicket-taker in the 2018–19 Plunket Shield season, with 36 dismissals in seven matches.

3. He was named in St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

He was appointed to St Kitts and Nevis Patriots roster for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League in July 2020.  St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots signed Australians Chris Lynn and Ben Dunk, as well as Ish Sodhi and Sohail Tanvir. Rassie van der Dussen returned to the Patriots after a successful stint with the team in 2018, as did Fabian Allen, Evin Lewis, Sheldon Cottrell, and captain Rayad Emrit.

4. He was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was the seventh edition of the competition, held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman from October 17 to November 14, 2021. However, experienced legspinner Astle forced his way into the T20 World Cup team, alongside frontline combination Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, with spin likely to play a key role in the competition. Thus, In August 2021, Sodhi was named to New Zealand’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

4. He made his One Day International debut for New Zealand against Zimbabwe 

On August 2, 2015, Sodhi made his One Day International debut for New Zealand against Zimbabwe.  A One Day International (ODI) is a type of limited-overs cricket game played between two international teams in which each team confronts a defined amount of overs, currently 50, and the game can take up to 9 hours.  This format is used for the Cricket World Cup, which is contested every four years. One Day International (ODI) matches are sometimes known as Limited Overs Internationals (LOI), while this word can also refer to Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.

Ish Sodhi who is a Kiwi leg spinner for the Rajasthan Royals 2017 IPL season, is also an aspiring rapper. He writes and composes music and hopes to pursue his second passion in the future.

Sodhi thought that momentum was crucial in the first T20 game, and India took it all with an incredible start from the openers. “T20 cricket is all about momentum, and I believe Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan put on a good opening partnership that set the tone for the rest of the game.” “I think it’s just a matter of recognizing those important moments and figuring out how to stem their momentum,” Sodhi explained.

7. He believed that eliminating the Indian batsmen from the equation was important to his team’s T20 World Cup victory

Ish Sodhi of New Zealand believed that taking the Indian batters out of the equation was a key factor in his team’s T20 World Cup victory. He went on to say that it was critical to bowl following the conditions. Sodhi, along with Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, was key in limiting India to 110/7 in 20 overs. In response, New Zealand won their opening game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by chasing down the target with 33 balls to spare.

8. He was named as the Rajasthan Royals’ spin consultant

On January 2, 2020, IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals announced that New Zealand leg spinner Ish Sodhi would join the team’s support staff as a Spin Consultant, while also helping with operations for the forthcoming season of the VIVO Indian Premier League 2020. Sodhi was to work closely with Rajasthan Royals spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule and Chief Operating Officer Jake Lush McCrum in his new role with the organization.

At the age of 23, Sodhi fared well in his native country and, knowing a thing or two about dealing with stressful conditions, will look to make a statement against India in the first Test at Kanpur.

The game was a knockout round of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2012, and New Zealand was up against West Indies, who boasted a formidable pace attack. To win, New Zealand needed 22 runs from the final two overs.
