Known as Sio Juliana Savea, is a New Zealand Rugby union player. He plays wing for Hurricanes in Super Rugby Aotearoa. He has formerly played for Touln in the top 14 and was also the former captain of the Wellington Lions in the Mitre 10 Cup.

Savea’s achievements were exclaimed between 2012 and 2017 when he won 54 caps for New Zealand. While his accomplishments might not fill a cup, they were surely significant and impactful to the All-Black Squad.

Here are the top 10 facts about Julian Savea.

1. He was nicknamed the bus

Savea was given the nickname the bus by under-20s coach, Dave Rennie. His nickname origins had a course it followed to erupt.

A New Zealand physicist demonstrated that the name isn’t just for show and that the supernova  All Blacks Winger Julian Savea’s nickname The bus is more than mere hyperbole. 

The physicist, Geoff Willmott from the University of Auckland ran the stats on Savea after New Zealand defeated France 62_13  in the World Cup quarter-finals.

He calculated that Savea was traveling at 7.5 meters per second when he ran in the third try of his hat _trivk against Les Bleus.

At  108 kilograms and 1.92 meters, Savea had a kinetic energy of 90 tonnes bus traveling at three kilometers an hour. This bizarre attainment earned him his famous nickname the bus.

2. He played for the Hurricanes

Savea played his second season for the Hurricanes in 2012. During the 2011 season, a quiet veil covered him and much of his appearance was not felt or seen during the matches of that season.

His 2012 form was vibrant and it earned him a call-up into the All Blacks for the three-test series with Ireland.

Before his international debut, he debuted in 2009 for the New Zealand sevens at Adelaide Sevens.

He benched for the hurricanes for three matches in the knockout round in the 2016 season, in which  Savea performed very poorly.

He was also benched for the semi-finals against the Lions in Johannesburg the following year, and Vince Aso returned from injury. The season ended with him making little to no appearance, he was replaced by Wes Goosen as a starting left wing for the Lions.

3. He was nominated for  World Rugby player of the year in 2014

In 2012 Savea was named to the All-Black squad in his first season of international rugby. On his debut, he scored three tries for the All Blacks against Ireland in the first test at Eden park.

He became the first All Black to score three tries against Ireland in a test match and the fourth to score three tries on his All Blacks debut.

With much talent oozing,  Savea was nominated for the World Rugby Player of the year award but it was won by his teammate Brodie Retaliick.

4. He was one of the best performers in the 2015 Rugby World Cup

Savea was given an honorary mention in the 31 men’s All-Black squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

It’s through this season that his abilities advertised him, making it impossible not to be a fan, he scored 8 tries across the tournament and has played many games throughout the tournament.

His eight tries saw him equal the records for the most tries in a single tournament, which was previously achieved by the late former all-BlackJonah Lomu and South Africa’s Bryan Habana. The hat trick he performed, which he scored against France saw him being compared to Lomu.

Savea was noted as being one of the best performing players of the tournament and was for the second time nominated for Worlds Rugby’s player of the year award. This bypassed him and the award went to a teammate, Dan Carter.

5. He lost his spot in All black to a rookie

Savea truly had his moments but every glory reaches a stale point and for the energetic player, it came sooner than expected.

The young player lost his spot in the All Blacks to a rookie, Blues  Wing Rieko Loane for the first two sets against the British and Irish Lions in 2017. Savea made his last appearance for the team on 8th July 2017 in the third test in black Jersey, following injuries to Waisake Naholo and Loane having an illness. Luck was surely not on his side and he played badly during a potential try.

6. He was dropped from the Blacks Squad

Julian’s cards were filled with doom, during the 2016 and 2017seasonsn, he showered the field with one bad performance after another.

He was sadly dropped from the  All Blacks squad for the 2017 Rugby Championship when the All Blacks were named on his 27th birthday, with Loan, Naholo, and Hurricane teammates Nihe Milner Skudder all recovering from injury and illness.

7  . He was charged with assault

Savea shocked his fans in April 2013 when headlines exposing his violent behaviors towards his partner emerged. He was charged with assault over domestic violence, but the charges were later withdrawn after Savea completed police diversion.

At a press conference, he withheld the details of the incident and instead gave a tearful apology and stated “To my partner and family, I want to say I am sorry “.

8 . He was the IRB Junior Player of the year, in 2010

Julian has had his fair share of glory from a young age, he first won the 2010 IRB Player of the year. He became the star of the IRB world U20 tournament scoring eight tries in three games.

In that game,  he scored four tries in one match against Sam, and two against Wales and South Africa. 

9 . He held two ceremonies for his wedding

Savea married his girlfriend, Fatima who had been committed to each other for three years. The couple shared their exciting news through Instagram.

There were two ceremonies held, first for Fatima a Muslim ceremony was held as she subscribes to Islam.

A wedding isn’t complete without friends and a second ceremony and reception were held and attended by Julian’s All Blacks and Hurricanes Comrades in Wellington in December 2015. The couple had a daughter, Jude Telesia Savea who was born in 2017.

10. He has a brother playing for the Hurricanes

Savea isn’t the only talented fruit in his family, his younger brother Ardie is a New Zealand professional Rugby Union team based in Wellington. He was a nominee for 2019 World Rugby Player of the year.
