His brother Adriaen, under whose tutelage he started his studies, was where he remained until 1641 when he established his own practice.

In 1641 and 1642, he created paintings in the style of his brother, including the Five Sense which Adrian later depicted as a Man reading a Newspaper, a Peasant sipping Beer, a Rustic applying Ointment to his Sores, and a Countryman sniffing at a Snuffbox.

An example of Isaac’s work from this time period can be found in the paintings Laughing Boor with a Pot of Beer in the Amsterdam Museum and Cottage Interior with Two Peasants and Three Children Near a Fire in the Berlin Museum.

Then, against the bright background, the figurines appear with skill. It is important to note the roadside inns that are part of the collections of Buckingham Palace and the National Gallery in London.

Inns in Dutch society served as gathering places for guilds of artisans, merchants, and notaries in addition to being temporary homes for travelers and centers of social activity.

Dutch genre scenes usually feature idlers and drinkers at taverns, but Isack van Ostade’s portrayal of workmen stocking an inn is extremely uncommon.

The white horse, which appears to be as constant an accompaniment as the grey in Philip Wouwerman’s battles and fairs, is always given a special place.

4. He developed a more ambitious style after branching from his brother

Isaac’s previous experience as a figure painter greatly aided his progression along his new path.

Although he now chose his subjects from frozen canals or village high streets, he gave the scenes new life by portraying animated groups of people with a refined and thorough study of picturesque contrasts.

The skating and sledding scenes that are depicted in the Lacaze collection as well as the galleries of the Hermitage, Antwerp, and Lille provide the earliest example of Isaac’s acquiescence to Adriaen’s style.

Three of these pieces have the artist’s name, spelled Isack van Ostade, and the years 1644 and 1645.

Warm and sunny, yet mellow and hazy, as if the sky were shrouded in a vapor colored by moor smoke, characterizes the air that permeates his piece.

The trees are rubbings in number, with touches of amber varnish media solidified in a liquid condition at the tips of the conspicuous foliage.

The same theory lends an artificial and conventional mark to small elements like glazed brickwork or rents in dwellings’ mud lining.
