Willem Breuker was a Dutch bandleader, composer, arranger, saxophone, and clarinetist who lived from 4 November 1944 until 23 July 2010.

Over the course of more than 45 years, he occupied a distinctive position in both the Dutch and global music scenes.

He is among the most attractive and adaptable “people’s music” creators, as he preferred to describe it.

He pushed through existing norms to create new forms and new possibilities for himself, other musicians who performed with him, as well as younger musicians from the next generation or two.

Breuker was a pioneer in jazz and improvised music and the founder of a new style of Dutch music theatre.

He allowed both seasoned musicians and up-and-coming musicians the opportunity to take part in his own musical events as a composer and arranger. Here are 10 amazing facts about Willem Breuker.

1. He’s performed with a variety of bands

His willingness to explore within his own compositions, into which he incorporated a wide range of musical styles including elements from theatre and vaudeville, is what made his work so authentic.

He drew from an extraordinarily rich reservoir of experience, which was further nourished by his unbounded curiosity and early interests.

Breuker was a part of the Gunter Hampel Group and the Globe Unity Orchestra. He started directing the 10-piece Willem Breuker Kollektief in 1974.

Which performed jazz in a dramatic and frequently unorthodox manner, incorporating elements from theater and vaudeville. 

2. He has received numerous awards and accolades

As an internationally acclaimed composer, musician, and organizer, he has won countless awards.

His diversity, which stemmed from the outset from his intense desire for all kinds of musical expression, is not defined by mere eclecticism or post-modern tiredness, according to the 1993 VPRO-Boy Edgar Prize jury.

He received the Wessel Ilcken Prize (1970 for jazz), the SMR Prize (1972 for jazz), the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize (1976; declined), and the significant Gouden Kalf Prize (1982 for Dutch film).

The Zilveren Lessenaar Prize (1984 for a film),  the Edison Prize (1984 for a film), and the Bird Award (1988) at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

The VPRO/Boy Edgar Breuker was also given the title of Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw [Knight of the Dutch Lion] in 1998.

3. He has been successful in capturing the urge to be creative and putting it in a social context

Breuker has demonstrated his abilities as an organizer and motivator by successfully harnessing his creative inclination and putting it in a social context. For instance, Breuker established his own record and CD label, BVHaast, in 1974.

This company has released recordings by Dutch jazz bands as well as current music by primarily Dutch composers in addition to many of Breuker’s own creations.

Breuker organized the annual Klap op de Vuurpijl [Top It All] year-end festival in Amsterdam from 1977 to 2005, a five-day presentation of the modern improvisational and written music he thought was significant.

 He founded improvised music workshops, teaching both professional and amateur musicians, with which he has been associated since the 1960s.

Additionally, he feels strongly about using the participants’ viewpoints and experiences as a starting point.

He never demands that music be constrained. Instead, he wants to inspire people to be authentic and allow them to find who they are via music.

The musical scores released by Haast Music Publishers, which is Willem Breuker’s own music publishing organization, contain some of the outcomes of his workshops from the past 40 years.

These scores are frequently used in the development of his many projects as fundamental practice material.

5. Breuker began his professional career in 1966

 He started his professional career in 1966 when he started performing his own music in his distinctive, unconventional style, which has occasionally left audiences in astonishment.

He frequently interpreted contemporary cultural or political events during his concerts and shows, which was unusual at the time.

Because he frequently incorporated improvisation and theatrical aspects in his music, it was also seen as being novel.

6. He was a founding member of the Instant Composers Pool (ICP)

He co-founded the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) in 1967 along with the drummer Han Bennink and the pianist Misha Mengelberg, with whom he collaborated often until 1973.

The first independent European record label, ICP, was founded around this time period as well.

Breuker has created various ensembles since the 1960s that have successfully fused composed, improvisational, and theatre music.

In addition, he was a member of Gunter Hampel’s ensemble, the first ensemble to include both European and American improvisers. He established the Willem Breuker Kollektief in 1974.

Along with playing with this orchestra, he also collaborated with pianist Leo Cuypers in a duo setting and participated in Kollektief improv sessions with smaller groups of musicians.

He also collaborated with musicians such as pianist and trumpeter Nedly Elstak, pianist Alex von Schlippenbach, contrabassist Harry Miller, and bandleader Hannes Zerbe.

Breuker has performed with the Willem Breuker Kollektief all over the world for the past 36 years. 

8. Breuker created his first whole evening theatre piece in 1970

Through his constant partnerships with playwright Lodewijk de Boer, with the Theaterunie serving as producer, Breuker’s innovations in Dutch music theatre were furthered.

As a result, the Willem Breuker Kollektief members also participated as actors in projects like Kain en Abel, Anthologie, De Vuyle Wasch, and Wolkbreuk, among others.

Breuker composed music for plays by Brecht Baal and Drums in the Night, among others for the theater company Baal, as well as for La Plagiata, which once more included members of the Willem Breuker Kollektief performing the music and acting.

Among Breuker’s many cinema compositions are Twee Vrouwen by George Sluizer and De Illusionist by Freek de Jonge.

Additionally, he composed the soundtracks for almost a dozen movies directed by Johan van der Keuken, including De Nieuwe IJstijd and Platte Jungle.

9. He has been featured on TV shows

He wrote a piece for cello and the Willem Breuker Kollektief at Yo-Yo Ma’s request, and it premiered on a live broadcast on VPRO TV in the Netherlands.

More than 100 records, CDs, and numerous radio and television broadcasts in both Dutch and foreign broadcast media have also featured his work.

Together with Carrie de Swaan, he created the 48-hour, 12-part radio documentary Componist Kurt Weill in 1997, which explored the biography of Kurt Weill.

10. He died of lung cancer

Breuker passed away in Amsterdam on July 23, 2010. He had been ailing for some time and had lung cancer.

In the field of music instruction, Willem Breuker is renowned for his innovations.
