Jamala was born in 1983 to a Crimean Tatar father. Her mother is Armenian. Susana Jamaladinova is her real name. Jamala is her Stage name.

Her parents divorced for about four years so that her mother could purchase a house in Crimea for the family under her maiden name. During this period, Soviet authorities did not allow ethnic Crimean Tatars, like her father, to purchase property in Crimea.

She is married to Bekir Suleimanov. Their relationship became known in September 2016. This was when she appeared with him at the Manhattan Short Film Festival.

She is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter, and actress. She represented Ukraine and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, with her song 1944. The singer found international success in 2016 after winning the Eurovision Song Contest.

Amazingly, she began singing at the age of nine. Singing 12 folk and children’s Crimean Tatar songs. She graduated from Petro Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. She studied opera, however, pop music has proven to be her real calling.

1. Her Parents Divorced for about Four Years for her Mother to Purchase a House in Crimea

Jamala was born in Osh, Kirghiz SSR. To a Muslim Crimean Tatar father and Armenian Mother. Her Crimean Tatar ancestors were forcibly resettled from Crimea to the central Asian republic. This was under Joseph Stalin during World War II, although her relatives fought on the Soviet side.

However, her family returned to Crimea in 1989. Her maternal ancestors are Armenians from the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Soviet Authorities did not allow ethnic Crimean Tatars, like her father, to purchase property in Crimea. Thus her parents divorced for about four years.

They divorced so that her mother could purchase a house in Crimea for the family. She purchased it under her maiden name.

She attended the Music School (piano class) in her hometown Alushta. She later joined Simferopol Music College and also graduated from the National Music Academy.

She majored in Opera singing. Being at the top of the class, Jamala planned to devote herself to classical music, envisioning her career as a soloist at the famous Milan La Scala opera. Nevertheless, her true passion for Pop and experiments with soul and oriental music changed her plans.

On 14 February 2010, Jamala released her first single from her debut studio album ‘For Every Heart. The single was ‘You Are Made of Love’.

Her second single was ‘It’s Me, Jamala’. Which she released on 18 October 2010. The smile was her third single from the album.

On 8 November 2012, she released ‘I Love You as the lead single from her second studio album All or Nothing.

She released “Hurt” as the second single. “Cactus” was released on 6 March 2013, as the third and final single from the album. She has also released other albums.

6. She Attempted to Represent Ukraine at Eurovision Song Contest with the song Smile

Early in 2011, she participated in the national selection show. In an attempt to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Smile”. The song was a crowd favourite.

 Jamala managed to land a spot in the finals of the competition.

However, due to a controversy over miscounting votes, another final was set for March 3. Although Jamala would still advance into the finals she decided to withdraw from the competition on March 1. She claimed that the votes would have been rigged again.

7. Jamala Successful Represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016

She represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. She participated in the song ‘1944’. The song is about the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944.

She said that she dedicated the song to her great-grandmother who lost her daughter. She lost her while being deported to Central Asia.

Jamala wrote the song’s lyrics in 2014. During the second semi-final of the contest, she performed 14th. However, she was one of the ten participants who qualified for the grand final.

Amazingly, it was announced later that she emerged the second. She scored 287 points. She won the televoting with 152 points. Finally, she won the competition with 534 points.

8. Former Ukrainian President gave Jamala the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine

The former Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, assigned Jamala the title of the Honoured Artist of Ukraine. This was after she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.

The president said that Jamala’s victory was of paramount importance to the Ukrainian Nation. Moreover, including the Crimean Tatars due to the tragic history of the Crimean Tatar people that was more than 72 years ago.

“The victory was fantastic. You’ve made many people happy,” Poroshenko told Jamala when handing over that honorary award during a meeting on Monday evening, the presidential press service reported.

She was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine by the then-Ukrainian president.

9. She Served as a Judge during the Eurovision Song Contest for Four Years

Jamala has served as a judge at Vidbir. This is the Ukrainian Nation’s selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. She has served for four years, In 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

10 . She Took Refuge in Romania with her Family

She is married to Bekir Suleimanov. Their relationship became known in September 2016, when she appeared with him at the Manhattan Short Film Festival. The couple was blessed with two children.
