Lay Phyu attended and graduated from Mandalay University. In University he was an English major. It is also back in University that he met Y wine, one of the aspiring singers from the Iron cross band.

3. He was a member of the “Iron Cross” band

Lay Phyu met Y Wine during his time at Mandalay University. Y wine was one of the aspiring singers from the Iron Cross music band (a renowned rock band in Myanmar).

He eventually joined the “Iron Cross” band, which was founded by Saw Bwe Hmu, a famous guitarist and songwriter. Later Chit Sang Maung became the head guitarist after Bwe Hmu passed away. Later Ah Nge, Myo Gyi and Y wine joined the new aspiring band.

He has performed Live with the band consistently since 1993, including on tours to Singapore, The United States, Japan and Malaysia.

4. Lay Phyu rose to fame with his first album

From his early career days, Lay Phyu became successful with his first album “Gandarya Lamin” (Desert Moon) and helped define the genre of Burmese rock music. Much of his music was inspired by bands such as Nazareth, Metallica, Van Hallen, Scorpion, Bon Jovi and Dream Theatre.

Lay Phyu first started his pursuit of fame when he covered English songs in Burmese. Later on, he gained confidence and popularity in his music career, he began to compose a few of his music.

5. He has released 13 Top list solo albums so far

Lay Phyu has released 13 top hit solo albums so far. Some of his most notable solo albums include; Gandarya Lamin (Desert Moon), Pinle Aw Than (Cries of the sea), Power 54, Thargaung (The Prey), Einmet Kabya (Dream Poem), Mummy Mya (The Mummies) etc.

His most notable collaborations include Saw Bwe Hmu Amhattaya (2), Do Ye Chit – Thu Mya Ne, Iron Cross Band Unplugged and Iron Cross Band Acoustic.

In 2012, Lay Phyu shot a new music video in Ocean City, MD for his album. The video was shot by Burmese director Danyar. The title of the track is called “Kyo Hnint Dawt.” Another music video, Yote Thein Pay also featured footage of recording sessions and the 2012 USA tour.

His first album Sakar Lone Ma Shi Ta Kaung Kin released 27 years ago, he was 29 years old when this album was released. There are 17 songs on the album

His last Album Late Pyar was released 11 months ago. When Late Pyar was released, he was 56 years old- this album contains twelve tracks. Such a remarkable feat he achieved here.

In 2008 when cyclone Nargis struck the southwestern parts of Myanmar, Iron Cross as well as many other famous artists formed a collaboration of songs to raise funds to help visitors rebuild their livelihoods. An organization from California sponsored the charity and published a song called “Hands with love.”

The collaboration then proceeded to perform “hands with love” written by Raggie, raising awareness among Myanmar locals of the damage that natural disasters can cause to people’s social, economic and environmental lives.

10. Lay Phyu’s twin daughters passed away

After the Californian organization sponsored the charity and published a song for it, the same anonymous sponsor published and performed a song “a yay ma Kyi bue” (Not the end of the world) in the same year, dedicated towards his twin daughters he had lost.
