The prince’s palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Sovereign prince of Monaco. It was built in 1191 as a Genoese Fortress.

1. The Palace was First Established as a Fortress

The Prince’s Palace of Monaco was established as a fortress in 1191. This was when the harbour was acquired by the Republic of Genoa. The harbour is today lined by Monte Carlo.

 In 1215 the defensive system of the castle was upgraded with the construction of a rampart with four towers and a curtain wall. This forms the core of the present palace.

2. The Palace was Captured by Francois Grimaldi in 1297

A legend about the Prince’s Palace of Monaco states that in January 1297 Francois Grimaldi sought shelter at the castle. He murdered the guard acter obtaining entry to the fortress.

However, his men appeared and captured the Castle. Thus the fortress became the stronghold of Grimaldi. This event is commemorated by a statue of Francois Grimaldi

Charles, I ruled from 1331 to 1356. He was the son of Francois Grimaldi’s Cousin Rainer I. Charles 1 Significantly enlarged the fortress by adding two large buildings.

One building was against the eastern ramparts and the second looking out over the sea. This changed the appearance of the fortress into a fortified house.

5. Transformation of the Fortified House into a Palace Took Place in the 15th Century

 The east side of the fort was constructed into a three-storeyed wing. It was guarded by walls that connected the bastion towers.

Furthermore, during the sixteenth century, the treaty of Tordesillas came into use. It clarified the position of Monaco as a protectorate of Spain. This helped the ruler to focus on the other side of the residence as there was no constant need to defend it.

6. The Palace was Confiscated during the French Revolution

During the French Revolution, the revolutionaries confiscated the palace. It became a military hospital and poorhouse.

However, the palace was given back to the Grimaldis in 1814 by the Treaty of Â鶹APP. In the 19th century, the succeeding Princes worked on restoring the palace and retrieving the furnishings and works of art that had been dispatched during the French Revolution.
