Best Time to Visit Milan

Known as Italy’s fashion and design capital, choosing the best time to visit Milan depends on what you’re looking for during your stay. If you want to visit the city’s landmark attractions, it’s best to visit in the spring, when the weather is cool, and the crowds are thinner.

Winter in Milan is cold and grey, though there are far fewer crowds. Fall is rainy and chilly but also less crowded, except during September fashion week when the city is sold out.

Summertime in Milan is great for festivals, but it’s also very hot and crowded. Tourist attractions remain open year-round, with the exception of December 25 and January 1, when virtually every attraction in Milan is closed.

Spring is the High Season

Milan in spring, between April and May, is great if you wish to avoid the heat or crowds of summer. Sipping coffee outside pavement cafés and people-watching from the piazzas are all part of a spring holiday in Milan. Book a Milan spring hotel to enjoy alfresco aperitifs and the advent of spring fashion in the city of style.

Spring also marks the start of the alfresco drinking and dining season. Come 6 pm, the bars, and restaurants that line the waterways of the Navigli and Porta Ticinese canal quarters are filled with locals and visitors sipping happy hour drinks and nibbling on tasty Italian cold cuts and cheeses.

As temperatures are still fresh, leather leggings, tailored trousers, and sleek dark denim are staples to pack for bottoms. Stick with shoes you can actually walk in like flat boots, stylish sneakers, and foldable ballet flats.

Like many large cities, Milan can be a challenge during the hottest months of summer, and it takes a bit of planning to enjoy the highlights in comfort. This season is typically drier, and it is advisable to stay hydrated and take breaks from the City center to the much cooler coast and countryside when you feel overheated.

The city is well connected to numerous tourist attractions like the Gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral, Navigli canals, and the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent housing Leonardo da Vinci’s mural “The Last Supper,”. All these destinations are within short distances from the city center, and You will not need to rent a car to access them.

When packing for a summer trip to Milan, make sure to toss in a floral frock and breezy white cotton sundress along with some mix-and-match pieces. Avoid packing thick fabrics, and even denim could be too heavy to wear in the summer. Denim shorts aren’t really worn in Milan, pack culotte pants that are just as light to wear.

Milan hits its stride in the fall when the city fills with fashion lovers from across the globe for Milan Fashion Week. The mild temperatures during this period keep the outdoor cafés and clubs packed with sophisticated urbanites far past midnight.

You can expect temperatures to be around 18°C/65°F in September, cooling down to 15°C/59°F in October, and getting brisk in November at 12°C/53°F. At night the temp gets much cooler throughout the season.

Late September brings Milan fashion week to the city along with the top celebrities from around the globe. Even if you can’t enter any events, just witnessing the fashion spectacles on the street is a memorable experience.

Outside of fashion week, fall is still a fun time to dress for Milan. Cooler temperatures mean more opportunities to layer. As you’ll be heading in and out of famous museums, cafes, and sites you’ll want to layer smartly to balance the warm indoors and old outside.

Winter is the Best Time to Visit on a Budget

While most people think about visiting Milan in the summer or autumn, visiting Milan in winter is a great way to experience some of the city’s best festivals, enjoy the museums and monuments without the crowds, and appreciate the hearty nature of Milan’s cuisine.

Temperatures go near freezing point in Milan during the winter months, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find plenty to keep you busy in the city. You can visit world-class museums, go shopping in less crowded boutiques, or go hiking in the nearby Alpine peaks.

Because the winter weather can be quite drab and foggy, it will obviously impact your decisions on what to wear particularly at night when the temperature drop.  Pack a pair of warm gloves, a thick scarf, and a hat. If you are planning to go to the north, carry a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals too.
