Enrique was born in1966 in the Atlacomulco state of Mexico which is about 55 miles northwest of Mexico City. He has four siblings and he is the oldest among the four. His father was an electrical engineer by the name of Gilberto Enrique. His mother Maria del Perpetuo was a school teacher.
Enrique belonged to a political family. He was the nephew of two former governors of the Mexican state. The family lived in Atlacomulco city for 11 years then moved to the city of Toluca.
He was exposed to politics at a very young age with his father taking him to campaign trails of his uncle. At the age of fifteen, he began working as part of the campaign crew. He was involved in delivering political literature, in support of his uncle’s campaign, and at this point, he developed a strong interest in politics.

Enrique attended Denis Hall school in Alfred Maine to learn English in the year 1979. He joined the University Of Panamerican in1984 when he was 18 years. He took a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies. He later proceeded for his master’s degree in Business Administration at a university in the state of Mexico.

Enrique’s political ambition began in his teenage years when he distributed political literature in favor of his relative. He then joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1984.
At the time, he was in his final year of a law degree. So his political involvement earned him some money. He also worked as a public notary in Mexico City. His relative Alfredo del Mazo Gonz谩lez was mentioned as a firm candidate for the 1988 presidential election. This was a good chance for Enrique to be more engaged in the political arena and that’s how he entered politics.

He also worked at the law firm of Laffan Muse and Kaye. He established good networks with a lot of presidents of big companies in Mexico.

Montiel was by then the secretary of the citizen movement of zone 1 of the State Directive Committee of the CNOP (National Confederation of Popular Organizations).
CNOP was one of the three sectors of the PRI party. He was guided to be a delegate of the organization in those conservative years. He rose to the position of chief of staff during the regime of Montiel Rojas as governor.
When Rojas was the secretary of economic development of the state of Mexico, Enrique served as his secretary. This position led him to get the role of sub-secretary of the interior of Mexico.

He began his governorship position from the year 2005 to 2011. He had promised his voters to fulfill all the over 600 promises he made to them. He even signed in front of a notary to convince his followers that he would deliver. It was noted that in 2006 the administration achieved about 141 projects out of the 608 he had promised. Hence making it the most busiest and successful year of the governor.
The promises included the building of highways and trains for public transportation, adequate water supply to the city, and public health services. The governor delivered by building over 196 hospitals and mobile dispensaries for the less fortunate. He did a lot during his six-term as the governor to achieve all the promises he made to his supporters.

Enrique was the 64th president of Mexico from 2012 to 2018. Though there was a lot of protest around his presidency he did a lot during his tenure. He was able to improve the economy of Mexico. The manufacturing sector improved because the president committed over 10 billion dollars to the sector.
The special economy zones were improved by the treaties signed to develop laws for special economic zones that were depressed. He also tackled domestic policy by reducing the power of teachers’ unions and creating centralization of hiring and promoting teachers.

Enrique had his fair share of controversy during his presidential rule. The first being that he controlled social media and his government was accused of spreading propaganda through social media.
Reports showed that he had spent almost 2 billion dollars on media publicity. He was also linked to various corruption scandals in the country. He was known for not defending the press. A perfect example is the incident of the journalist who was killed on service a case believed to have a political linkage.
