The Nautilus house is a unique house shaped like a seashell that integrates aquatic design into architecture and is located in Naucaloan, northeast of Mexico City.

The house is a site of wonder and it was constructed using a technique called ferrocement construction.

The house has hundreds of small rainbow-colored stained glass windows, line spaces of ceiling and walls, and stunning lush grass surrounding flower-shaped couches.

The Nautilus house is truly a wondrous demonstration and a display of the infinite imagination of the human mind.

The House is home to a young family who has been blessed to exist in a natural home, full of tranquility.

1. The house was designed for a young family of four

Many individuals have probably imagined what life would feel like living in the sea or sea shells under the sea, while such dreams are easy to imagine often the reality to achieve them is quite difficult.

This wasn’t the case for a young Mexican family with two children, who had grown tired of living in a conventional home and decided to reconnect to nature.

The family hired an experienced architect to create their dream house.

2. The Nautilus house was designed by Javier Senosiain

The quirky house design was brought to life by Mexican architect Javier Senosiain, an organic architect whose work combined architecture with contemporary art.

Senosiain is a Mexican architect known to be one of the first architects to design organic architecture in Mexico.

In the course of his career, he experimented and worked with all other areas of architecture but he found his niche in organic architecture.

He is the founder of the organic Architecture firm in Mexico City responsible for designing, offices, houses, and factories.

He has also authored two books called Bioarquitectura and Arquitectura. Sebastian designed the Nautilus house to make the home dwellers feel like a mollusk moving from one chamber to the other.

3. The concept of the house mimicked the nautilus seashells

The architecture of the Nautilus house mimics and reinterprets the shape of the nautilus and this can be seen in the rounded shapes and curves of the structure.

The Nautilus is an invertebrate related to octopus and squid and is the only animal to have a visible shell.

Its shells are not only beautiful but also protect from external danger, and when it sees a threat, it withdraws into its shell and seals itself with a flashy trapdoor called a hood.

The shells of the nautilus are fascinating, it not only offers protection, but the spiral of its shell also responds to a mathematical logarithm, igniting imaginations of all kinds it influenced inventors like Robert Fulton, the creator of the submarine, and writers like Jules Verne.

4. The house has a unique design

The house structures were constructed with steel frames coated with wire mesh of small diameter on which a thin layer of concrete four to five inches thick was poured.

The technique employed during its early construction allowed natural curved and rounded, eliminating the necessity of bearing walls or pillars.

The interior of the house is a mesh of wonder as the spirals, and circles, and has organic rooms that mimic the concave cameras one would expect to find inside a giant mollusk

5. The house demanded a large volume to exist

The plan of the Nautilus house had a flexible design as it continued to evolve during construction to meet the desired reality as well as to create enough volume for the layout of the house to bring its artistic design.

During the construction, a harmonious space was obtained in three dimensions, where the continuous dynamic of the fourth dimension was meant to move in a spiral on the steps with the perception of the sensation of floating on vegetation.

6. The house was earthquake proofed

The Nautilus house is just not a site of bewilderment though it’s a house most remembered for its uniqueness and beauty it’s also earthquake-proof and has strong exterior protection.

Mexico City is one of the most disaster-prone urban areas in the world considering this, the house design was ensured against earthquakes.

During the construction of the house, Nautilus ferrocement composite material was used. The materials consist of a steel mesh distributed transversely small in diameter and coated with a special blend of concrete.

7. A natural serene ambiance embodied the house 

The opening of the shell house is covered by a wall of multi-colored crystals, which filter sunlight and project chromaticism in the back rooms.

The artwork continues further as the oath that costs the main room dispensed with potted plots and are planted in large integrated beds on the floor which is covered with natural stone.

Some of the walls have been laid with colored stones, as details of the bathroom or kitchen hood. The other rooms of the Nautilus house have incorporated Mexican handicraft furniture emphasizing a rich personality.

The Nautilus house is a detailed colorful environment without spatial limits and emanates a serene aura. The theme of the house is not only that of nautilus but also of other elements of nature.

The house has “carpet grass “that leads the residents through a network of stone paths to the different areas of the house.

9. The house construction consumed $218,000

The Nautilus house was designed to resemble a nautilus seashell and is the living embodiment of the creature and as one would expect, the cost of construction was no cup of tea.

The house construction cost $218,000 and is believed to be one of the costliest strange houses ever constructed.

10. The Nautilus house has serene surroundings

It’s no doubt that the house was carefully planned, upon entering the house one is greeted by the standing room, emerging from the inner gardens.

The house has a spiral staircase that flows into the studio space, from where one can see the mountain landscape that completes the exotic beauty of the house.
