Andrés Manuel López Obrador was born in the year 1953 on 13 November. He was known by his initials (AMLO) in the political space. He is a Mexican politician who also got the opportunity to serve as the 65th  president of Mexico in December 2018. Before his service in the presidential capacity, he was head of the government of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005.

Andres was born in Tepetitan which is a small village in the municipality of Macuspana in the southern state of Tabasco on 13 November 1953. He is the firstborn in his family. His paternal and maternal grandparents’ roots are traced back to indigenous and African descent.

Andres attended an elementary school in town which was named Marcos E. Becerra given the name after a poet of the same name. He only attended during the morning hours while in the afternoon he helped his parent at the store.

He later moved to the middle school in Macuspana but finished in another school in the state capital Villahermosa. He completed high school at age 19 and went to Mexico City to study at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Obrador studied political science and public administration from the year 1973 to 1976. He later received his degree in political science and public administration after the presentation of his thesis (Formation Process of the National State in Mexico 1821–1867).

3. Andrés Obrador began his political journey in college

During his college years, he stayed at Casa del Estudiante Tabasco which was on Violeta Street in the Guerrero neighborhood of Mexico City. The institution was financed by the Administration of the governor of Tabasco which was the effort of the poet Carlos Pellicer.

Pellicer saw the potential in Andres and invited him to his campaign as he sought the seat in the senate during the 1976 election. This built political passion in Obrador coupled with encouragement from his university professor influenced him to take a political career.

After his graduation, he returned home to his native Tabasco where he held various Government positions and also was a professor at Tabasco. During this time he met a student who encouraged him to embrace the progressive wing of the PRI party.

Andres later married Bertrand Medina on 8 April 1978 and had three sons. She died due to respiratory challenges on 12 January 2003. He remarried Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller who worked in the Mexico city government during his time as head of government of Mexico City. Together they had one son.

He is a baseball fan and over time has accumulated a lot of nicknames but the most popular one is the El Peje, he was voted as the most influential man by Time magazine in 2019.

 5. Andrés Obrador joined the PRI party to support Pellicer’s senatorial race

He joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) political party when he was supporting Carlos Pellicer’s campaign as senator of Tabasco. A year later he headed the indigenous people’s Institute of Tobacco. In 1984 he relocated to Mexico City to work at the National Consumer Institute, a federal government agency.

6. He became leader of the PRD party in 1996

López Obrador later resigned from his position with the government of Tabasco in the year 1988. He joined the left wing of the PRI which was at the time called the Democratic Current under the leadership of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas.

The movement stirred the formation of the National Democratic Front (Mexico) which become the party of the democratic revolution. He later run for the governorship of Tobasco but lost to PRI candidate  Roberto Madrazo. But he clinched the party leader position of the PRD (Party of the Democratic Revolution) from 2 august 1996 to 10 April 1999.

He was appointed as head of a federal district in the year 2000. During his time he led a lot of social programs that included financial assistance to help vulnerable groups in Mexico City.

López Obrador appointed former New York governor Rudy Giuliani to help in developing a policy that aimed at minimizing crime in Mexico City. Giuliani also directed the modernization of the Mexican city’s historic downtown which attracted a lot of tourist attractions.

While he was president he eradicated institution corruption by enhancing a series of constitutional laws and policies aimed at making it more difficult for corruption to occur. The reforms included removing corrupt leaders and officials from office.

Other laws focused on voter fraud reduction by strengthening the criminal act to ensure voter-related offenses were classified as criminal issues and not granted bail options. He even invited an international organization to help him investigate corruption and created government bodies to deal with corruption cases.

Andres has won awards like the world no tobacco day award by the World Health Organization in 2022. He has had honors like Guatemala: Great Collar of the Order of the Quetzal (5 May 2022). 

Other honors are such as Honduras: Grand Cross of the Order of José Cecilio del Valle (6 May 2022). Cuba: Medal of the Order of José Martí (8 May 2022). Grand Master and Collar of the Order of the Aztec Eagle (1 December 2018).

Andrés has written and published over fifteen books. With such a huge collection, one of his recent masterpieces is La mitad del Camino.
