Derbez was born and raised in Mexico City and showed interest in acting at an early age where he landed his first role as an extra in soap operas at the age of 12.

However, he later studied at the Mexican Film Institute and the Centro de Education Artistica landing his first role in the comedy TV series Cachun Cachun Ra Ra!

Derbez and Florida Meza co-created a sitcom named XHDRBZ which marked his debut as a producer in 2002.

However, also in 2002, he co-created, starred, and co-produced in the family sitcom La Familia P. Luche which gained him further recognition amongst the Mexican and Latin communities.
