Located in Teotihuacan, State of Mexico, this building is one of the most emblematic of the archaeological zone.

Its symbolism is linked to the fundamental concepts of the worldview of the ancient Mesoamerican peoples.

Teotihuacan was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, currently, it is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico.

2. The awesome tunnel was discovered beneath the feathered Serpent pyramid 

In 2003, a tunnel was discovered beneath the Feathered Serpent pyramid in the ruins of Teotihuacan, an ancient city in Mexico.

Undisturbed for 1,800 years, the sealed-off passage was found to contain thousands of extraordinary treasures lying exactly where they had first been placed as ritual offerings to the gods.

The tunnel was chanced upon by Mexican archaeologist Sergio Gómez Chávez, who, after days of heavy rain, noticed that a sinkhole was a danger to tourists.

The inhabitants of Teotihuacan would have walked past thousands of square feet of bright illustrated surfaces: the site is celebrated for its red fresco murals.

3. The interesting serpent’s head displays conventionalized features 

The serpent’s head displays conventionalized features consistent with many of the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic forms in Teotihuacan sculpture and mural painting.

The deep-set eyes are surrounded by feathers, and the nostrils also flare with feathered texture.

Three large fangs are present on each side of the mouth, demarcated by deep holes connecting to the main mouth cavity.

The feathered eyebrow is a motif on serpents that has deep antiquity in Mesoamerican art, traces of red pigment are visible on the frontal fangs

The squared nature of this head suggests that it comes from the earlier phase of one of Teotihuacan’s other pyramids.

4. Aim to arrive at the exquisite Pyramid of the serpent before opening time

Aim to arrive at Teotihuacan just before opening time at 9 am this is by far the busiest Mesoamerican site in Mexico, so it pays to get an early start.

Hire an official guide once inside the entrance, or obtain a comprehensive written guide before touring the site, as there are very few signs in English.

Guides charge around 850 pesos for 1 to 2 hours and 1500 pesos for 2 to 3 hours, note that it is permitted to leave the site for lunch and re-enter with your original ticket

Local vendors sell snacks, drinks, and handicrafts outside and inside the site – bring peso cash for these.

You can climb the Teotihuacan pyramids, but numbers are restricted and lines form for the Pyramid of the Sun soon after opening at 9 am.

5. To get to the fascinating pyramid one can use the metro it costs 5 pesos for one trip 

The bus terminal has its metro station, which is located on the yellow line. You can buy a single-use metro ticket or use a prepaid metro card.

Rides are very cheap, starting from 5 pesos per ride, and the ticket is purchased at the bus terminal.

The best option is an open return ticket. Buses leave every 15 minutes and are mainly intended for tourists.

Teotihuacan is about 50 km from Ciudad de Mexico, so it takes about an hour to get there. From the station, we can reach Teotihuacan in just 45 minutes.

There are several entrances and exits to the pyramid complex, but you only need to get off at the first stop by the pyramids

On the way back, you can get on the bus at one of the exits instead of walking back to the starting point. Buses are available to visitors all day long.

Teotihuacan is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, the entrance fee is 80 pesos per person, and you can move around Teotihuacan on your own.

It’s recommended to avoid Sundays, as Mexican citizens have free entry on that day, and a trip to Teotihuacan is a popular way to spend the day off.
