1. Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman
El Chapo, whose real name is JoaquÃn Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, is a former notorious Mexican drug lord who was the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. He was born on April 4, 1957, in La Tuna, Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico. Growing up, he was often beaten up by his father, whom he also helped in growing marijuana for local dealers. He thus started interacting with the drug business at an early age. By the late 1970s, he was working with Hector Luis Palma in the Guadalajara Cartel under their boss Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo. El Chapo later established his cartel in 1988 after Miguel was arrested. His operation conducted mass trafficking of heroin, cocaine, and marijuana across Europe and all over the United States. Utilizing distribution cells, long-range tunnels near borders, and a massive web of networks, he was able to export large quantities of drugs into America than any other trafficker in history.
Under his leadership, the Sinaloa Cartel became one of the most powerful criminal organizations, and the U.S. Intelligence Community widely regards it as the largest, most feared trafficking cartel in the world. For a long time, El Chapo managed to outrun law enforcement, evading arrests numerous times and even escaping from prison twice. His known brutal tactics, use of violence, bribery, and intimidation make him one of the most ruthless drug lords. Scores of innocent people, including politicians, law enforcement personnel, and rival cartel members have been killed on his orders. El Chapo was finally extradited to the U.S. in 2016, and convicted of drug trafficking and conspiracy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole and is serving at the ADX Supermax prison in Colorado. His life has been portrayed in numerous films, documentaries, and books, including the Netflix series, Narcos: Mexico.

2. Ovidio Guzman Lopez
Son of former Mexican drug lord, JoaquÃn “El Chapo” Guzmán, Ovidio is one of the top-ranking leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel. It has been widely reported that he started being involved in his father’s business in his early teenage years. He was born on 29 March 1990 to El Chapo’s second wife. He has been described as a ‘key lieutenant’ of his father and the cartel by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control. When his father was arrested, he is believed to have taken up more leadership roles in the cartel.
On 17 October 2019, Ovidio was arrested and briefly detained by Mexican authorities. What followed, however, gained international attention, as intense violence erupted in Sinaloa. Cartel gunmen, heavily armed and determined to see Ovidio released took to the streets, attacking houses of families of local military personnel. They also threatened to carry out mass civilian deaths. This pressured the authorities, and a few hours later, President Andres Manuel Lopez ordered his release to ‘avert more bloodshed’. This move was seen as a failure of the Mexican government in combating drug trafficking. On 5 January 2023, however, Ovidio was arrested again, and remanded to Federal Social Readaptation Center No.1. The U.S. has requested his extradition.
3. Rafael Caro Quintero
Rafael Caro Quintero is considered one of the most powerful drug lords in Mexican history. He was a co-founder of the former Guadalajara Cartel, alongside Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo. Born on October 3, 1952, in Sinaloa, Rafael reportedly began growing marijuana on his brother’s ranch. Within five years, he had acquired more ranches. His influence, amassing more wealth and networks only grew, making him one of the most notable drug lords. He expanded his operations, trafficking marijuana, cocaine, and heroin into the United States by the 1970s.
In 1985, Caro Quintero was responsible for the kidnapping of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, pilot Alfredo Zavala, Alberto Radelat, and American writer John Clay Walker. The four were tortured and murdered, and Quintero was arrested later that year for the murders. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but freed after serving 28 years due to a procedural flaw. This was heavily criticized, and pressure mounted on the Mexican government to re-arrest him. He was arrested on July 15, 2022.
4. Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada
Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia is one of the most enduring Mexican drug lords, having evaded capture for decades. He is currently the last remaining fugitive on the list of Mexico’s 37 most-wanted drug lords. With El Chapo behind bars, Zambada is the current top boss of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in the world. El Mayo Zambada began his criminal career in the 1970s, working as a drug trafficker for the Guadalajara Cartel. After the cartel disintegrated in the 1980s, he became one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of its top leaders. His ability to keep a low profile has led to claims that he may have had plastic surgery to change his appearance. He remains one of the most wanted drug lords.
5. Amado Carrillo Fuentes
Known as “Lord of the Skies,” for the massive fleet of jets he used to transport drugs, Carrillo was a powerful Mexican drug lord and leader of the Juárez Cartel. He was born on December 17, 1956, in Guamuchilito, Sinaloa, and got drafted into drug sales by his uncle Ernesto Carrillo at a young age. His criminal career effectively began with his membership in the Guadalajara Cartel, rising through the ranks, and later working with Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel. He smuggled drugs from Colombia to Mexico, then into the United States. He was born on March 8, 1970, in Apatzingan, Michoacán, Mexico. Not much is detailed about his early life, but his strict upbringing from his mother is considered a contributing factor to his violent eruptions. As a child, he often got into trouble, and his mother would punish him ruthlessly, sometimes making him walk on his knees.
Moreno Gonzalez began his criminal career as a small-time drug dealer, but he quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most powerful drug lords in Mexico. His cartel was run like a vigilante group, and he often used religious preaching to keep his members in check. He wrote a manual with instructions for his members, forbidding them from mistreating women, getting drunk, or selling drugs to the local community. Drugs were to be trafficked to Americans only. His philanthropic tendencies such as giving out loans to local farmers earned him the local’s admiration and love. Nonetheless, he used extreme brutality when dealing with cartel rivals, including beheadings.
Moreno Gonzalez was believed to have been killed in a shootout with Mexican authorities in December 2010. Four years later, however, it was discovered that he had survived. He was found by the authorities again and was killed in a shootout. His death was widely celebrated by the Mexican government as a major victory in the war against organized crime.
