Top 10 Fascinating Facts about Loboc River

Loboc River also known as the Loay River is a river in the Bohol province of the Philippines. It is one of the major tourist destinations of Bohol. The source of the Loboc River is located in the town of Carmen, almost in the centre of Bohol.

From Carmen, the river takes a westerly course for a distance of about 1.5 kilometres (1 mi) then flows due south into the Mindanao or the Bohol Sea. Let’s tame a look at some of the most fascinating facts about it;

Its drainage area of approximately, 520 square kilometres (200 sq mi), is bordered by a horseshoe-shaped chain of mountain peaks rising to an elevation of 800 metres (2,600 ft). This is one of the major reasons why it is one of the most visited places. 

Rainfall is distributed almost uniformly throughout the year, thus Loboc River has a steady and high base flow. The river has been consistent over the years and its flow is always the same during all seasons because of the uniformity of rainfall in the area.

Various activities on the river, including the river cruise and standup paddle boarding, typically feature a scenic trip upriver to Busay falls, or to various points in the river where visitors can enjoy buffets, cultural presentations, firefly watching, birding, and even paddle board yoga.

Before an earthquake that struck Bohol in 2013, night cruises on the Loboc river also featured light shows through coloured lights installed on the river banks. However, the lights were severely damaged due to the said earthquake.

3. There is also a hydroelectric plant on the Loboc River

There are two hydroelectric plants on the Loboc River. Construction on the first plant began in 1955, completed in 1957 and an expansion was completed in 1968. The second plant was built recently to increase the power needed in the area. 

The second plant has a piece of equipment which comprises two vertical Kaplan turbines, two vertical synchronous generators, hydraulic governors, electronic control systems, electrical output including transformers, intake gates, stop logs, overhead bridge crane and auxiliary equipment.

The pristine waters of Loboc River are not green in colour. As informed by the boatmen of the Loboc River the colour of the water is brown or transparent. Its greenish colour is produced by the reflection of the leaves’ colour.

A fascinating natural occurrence enjoyed every day by the people of Loboc. Its one of the most important aspects of the Loboc River and its significance is visible from afar. The River is one of the most visited places in the Philippines. 

5. The Loboc river has a cruise which goes at a fee

The Loboc river has a cruise which goes at a fee and is continuous throughout the day. The Loboc Cruise will have a 550 pesos adult fee and 275 pesos (50% off) for kids that are below 4ft. This will include a buffet lunch for the tour that will last about 1-1.5 hours.

Most of the establishments in Bohol island require cash transactions. The boat ride takes almost an hour on the Loboc river. The barges are across the river via bridge to the visitor centre and you can purchase tickets just before boarding the barge. The cruise prices are however subject to change.

You will also get to hear Filipino folk songs by the local children and watch the children do some folk dances. The townsfolk regales the passengers with native dances and songs. The visitors also get to dance the 鈥渢inikling.鈥� really nice to swim. There is also Filipino native dancing by groups of ladies and children who are always dressed in traditional costumes.

This river is very beautiful and wide. The water is nice and not too cold. The river has two stop points- at the waterfalls at the end of the river and at a place the sailors call “spring” which are very lovely places. You will also see local kids swimming and jumping from trees into the river.

7. There are several types of food in the Buffet

There are several types of food including; Adobo, rice, fried chicken and maybe 3 other dishes and a soup plus some cake. They also have firefly tours at night very nice and very friendly staff. 

There were many choices of food in the buffet. One can take this time to take some lunch and rest while sightseeing. The buffet is good except it is a ‘free for all’ type setup and won’t also run out of food.

There are several floating restaurants and resorts on and along the Loboc River, where one can enjoy peace and tranquillity and explore the waters in kayaks or SUP. There are also several operators running floating restaurants along this river.

Meals here are served hot with plenty of drinks and the food varies on every boat so ask for a referral. It is also beautiful when it was sunny, & even when it rained making it a good place to stand by and chill by the river bank restaurants or on the floating restaurants.

This river in Bohol is known to be one of the cleanest rivers in the country. Tourists take an hour-long cruise along the river while enjoying food, drinks and music. Local musicians play native and novelty music. There are days when guests can request songs, too.

Loboc or lubok means a deep portion of a river where people go to hide, especially from pirate attacks. The town of Loboc became a temporary capital of Bohol during World War II. Loboc River passes through Loay Bridge, Loboc Church, and Busay Falls. It is currently one of the most visited attractions in the country.
