Mali has a soccer team which is nicknamed Les Aigles that is governed by the Malian Football Federation. The Mali national football team represent both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Mali is known for having a major youth soccer power in both Africa and the world.

However, the country has never qualified for any senior FIFA World Cup finals in history. Mali withdrew from the FIFA World Cup on three occasions, in 1966, 1994 and 1998. They did not qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is set to be held in Qatar.

However, they have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations on 12 occasions. They have also participated in several other continental competitions within Africa. Mali is known for the top soccer players they have produced.

1. Salif Keita Traore

He used to play as a striker and most defenders feared playing against him. Keita was not blessed that the height of a modern striker, but he used to cause trouble playing through the centre.

He played for several clubs across Europe as he made a total of four hundred and fourteen appearances and scored two hundred and forty-two goals in his senior career. Salif Keita Traore won several trophies during his career with the major ones being in France. He was honoured by FIFA with the FIFA Order of Merit award in 1996.

2. Seydou Keita

Seydou Keita is a former professional Malian soccer player. He was a versatile midfielder who loved to operate as both a central and defensive midfielder. Keita notably played for Lens for five seasons, Barcelona for four seasons where he won 14 titles and several other clubs in France, Spain, China, Qatar and Italy.

He represented Mali senior soccer team since the age of eighteen. Keita had seven Africa Cup of Nations tournament appearances and a total of 102 caps for Mali. His style of play was so simple but intelligent as he used to command the midfield and take full control in ensuring his team won games.

3. Mahamado Mahamadou

Diarra is the third most notable Malian soccer player who graced the game. He used to play as a defensive midfielder who served as the captain of the Mali National team before his retirement. Diarra’s notable playing career was in England, France and Spain.

Playing for Lyon, Diarra was a player in demand as Manchester United and Real Madrid were after him. Real Madrid won the race for the big player who was the pivot of the midfield.

He was described as an aggressive, tactically aware, tough and disciplined player during his playing time. Diarra played soccer for several seasons and retired after making 335 appearances.

4. Chieck Tidiane Diabate

Diabate is another talented soccer player from Mali. He plays as a forward for Persepolis in the Persian Gulf Pro League. Diabate represented the Mali national team from 2005 to 2016.

He has represented soccer clubs in France, Italy and the UAE. With his massive block physique and height, Diabate is a bully of a striker who knows how to utilise the space afforded to him during attacks. He can hit the ball with power using both legs and also score massive goals with his header.

Adama is a former Malian professional soccer player who used to play as a defender. He is among the most decorated defenders from Mali during his playing time.

His career majorly spun around French clubs as he never played out of the French League. Coulibaly was a towering defender who could not be easily bullied off the ball by defenders and was exceptionally good in aerial contests.

6. Modibo Maiga

Born on 3rd September 1987, Modibo is a talented and professional soccer player who plays as a striker for Hajer and the Mali national team. Modibo has had a long but tough career as he played for Stade Malien, Raja Casablanca, Le Mans, Sochaux, West Ham United, Queen Park Rangers and Metz.

He has over one hundred club appearances but his scoring record is not that impressive. Modibo makes a huge presence of himself during attacks which help in putting off opponents’ defenders while his team attacks.

7. Adama Traore

The 27-year-old Malian professional soccer player is ranked as the seventh-best player from Mali. He currently plays for English Championship club Hull City as well as he represents the Mali national team.

Adama is a naturally gifted and talented midfielder who has played in several clubs. He has never participated in the senior FIFA World Cup but took part in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. During this tournament, he was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player.

8. Almamy Toure

Toure is a talented soccer player who plays as a right-back for the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. His senior career has spanned around two clubs, Monaco and Eintracht Frankfurt.

He made fifty-four appearances for the Monaco senior team and currently has fifty-three appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt. Touré is best known for his attacking mentality and pace. His contribution to attack has made him one of the best right-backs in Germany though he faces more competition from other top players.

9. Hamari Traore

The 30 years professional soccer player plays as a right back for Ligue 1 club Rennes. Hamari Traore is also the captain of his team. He has played in the Belgian and French leagues in his professional career.

For Rennes, Hamari is a vocal player who demands performance from his teammates during every game. With his wild pace and skills, Hamari is among the notable right-backs who are dominating in defence and attack.

10. Adama Tamboura

Tamboura is a Malian former professional footballer who used to play as a left-back. His soccer career was not that impressive but he was a top player.

He majorly played in the Swedish League and French league before he called it off from soccer. Adama was a remarkable player who was versatile in defence but never offered much in attack as he finished his senior career without a goal.
