Hussain Rasheed Ahmed is a Maldivian Sunni Islamic scholar and political leader in the Republic of the Maldives.
He is also the first elected President of the Republic of Maldives and is known for its Sunni Islamic positions.
He is very fluent in Arabic, and Urdu (other than “Dhivehi” Maldivian official language) and was born on March 18th, 1957.

Sheikh Hussain Rasheed is well known for his controversial public talks on political issues, especially the one regarding the former president of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom and his Islamic lectures and sermons (popularly known as Khutbahs).
He’s famous as “an Islamic religious politician in the Maldives, the only one who can make tough decisions wisely, find sustainable solutions for different types of controversial issues.” by some of his supporters.
2. He has had a number of positions in the government of the Maldives
Rasheed was the minister of State for Islamic Affairs in President Nasheed’s government, between 23 Dec 2010 to 7 Feb 2012.
During President Nasheed’s government between 24th November 2009 and 23rd December 2010, he also served as the minister of State for Home Affairs and the Minister of State for Islamic Affairs.
He also served as the Co-Chair of the “Riyaasee Commission,” a member of Fiqh Academy and also as the president of the Adhaalath party from 2006 to 2011.

Sheikh Hussain Rasheed’s father is a famous, well-recognized and respected personality in the South of Maldives.
His mother, Aishath Manikfaan was a niece of Sheikh Hussain Sharafuddin Al-Azhary.

Some of Hussein Rasheed’s educational achievements include:
Learning the Quran, Islamic Studies, Arabic and Dhivehi Language, from his Father, Ahmed Manikfaan
In 1970, he attended Madrasathul Husainiyya . Between 1971-1972, he attended Nooraani School.
He also managed to memorize the Quran: 1972 – Jamia Dharul Uloom, Daabeel / Gujrat / India. 1973 – Jamia Dharul Uloom, Taraj / India
He attended Secondary school at Jamia Darul Uloom Matliwala, Bharuch, India, attained a BA in Islamic Studies at Jamia Tha’leemaath Islamiyya, Pakistan, Gen.Diploma in Arabic Teaching at Jamia Ummul Qura, Mecca, Saudi Arabia and a Diploma in Arabic & Islamic Teaching at King Saud University, Riyad , Saudi Arabia.
5. Rasheed has also done a number of social services
He is a well-known teacher of so many Maldivians (teaching subjects of Arabic, Qur’an, and Islamic Studies.
He has also given so many public (Islamic) Lectures and “Dhars” (Lessons of Islamic knowledge).
Further, he has published so many books of Islamic knowledge, including Dhivehi Bas and others.
The latest publication he has started is Translating “Saheeh Muslim” into “Dhivehi” with explanations, in reference to Imaam Nawawi’s publication.
Till now 3 parts of this book have come to the market, out of the 12 parts expected of it.
6. He was part of the team gathered to investigate corruption allegations implicating a former Maldives president
Additionally, Hussain Rasheed was also a member of the commission gathered to investigate the acts of corruption done during President Maumoon’s administration.
The commission’s ill conduct against the Financial Act surfaced at a much later date.
7. Hussein has a net worth of $ 1- 5 million
Amongst the various allowances given to Hussain Rasheed, he earns the most, MVR 1.23 million, in dependence allowance. His dependents include his spouse and a child.

He was appointed as the co-chair of “Riyaasee Commission”, then he was appointed as Minister of State for Home Affairs.
23 December 2010, he was appointed as Minister of State for Islamic Affairs ,as a coup brought down President Nasheed’s government.
