The Parc de la Tête d’or ( “Park of the Golden Head”) is a large urban park in Lyon, France. It occupies an array of approximately 117 hectares.

The park is located in the Northern part of the 6th arrondissement. It features a lake where boating takes place during the summer months. Additionally, it features Jardin Botanique de Lyon.

In the central part, there is a small zoo without charge. The zoo hosts giraffes, deer, reptiles, Primates and other animals. The park is also rich in other activities such as sports equipment, such as a velodrome, boules court, mini-golf and equestrian facility.

1. The Name of the Park is Far Older than the Creation of the Park

In 1530, the lands where the current park is were the property of the Lambert Family. The location was already named Parc de La Tête d’Or. The name “Tête d’or” was found in a legend saying that a treasure with Christ’s head could be buried in the park.

In 1855, a clairvoyant woman was hired to find the precious relic. However, she could not locate it. The area was a flood zone composed of dead backwaters) of the Rhône and swamps. It remained like this until the park’s creation.

2. It was Founded by a French Lawyer

An urban park was planned in Lyon in 1812. Various locations were considered such as the hill of Fourvière, and the grounds owned in large part by the Hospices civils de Lyon were chosen.

The idea of the park was presented by French lawyer Claude-Marius Vaïsse. Claude said that he wanted to give nature to those who don’t have it

 In 1856, the land was bought from the Hospices Civils de Lyon. Work on the park began in 1856, under the leadership of Swiss landscape designers Eugene and Denis Bulher. The park was opened in 1857, even though at the time all the work was not yet completed.

The zoo was created at the same time as the park. At first, it was scheduled to create a farm for education purposes with local wild animals.

The zoo occupies six hectares. The zoo now houses 300 animals from 66 species. The animals include large mammals such as the Barbary lion which are extinct in the wild since 1922.

In October 2006 the zoo opened The African plain area. The area Presents 130 different animals. This area is divided into five parts where various animals are held such as antelopes, bred birds and turtles.

5. The Parc de la Tête d’Or is Famed for Its Botanical Garden

Jardin Botanique du Parc de la Tête d’Or (Botanical Garden of the Golden Head), is an 8 hectares of the municipal botanical garden. The Garden was established in 1857 as a successor to earlier botanical gardens dating to 1796.

The garden contains about 15,000 plants, 3,500 Plants are from temperate regions. The garden has 760 species of shrubs, 200 varieties of peonies and 50 varieties of water lilies.

6. The Origin of the Four Rose Gardens came as a Gift from a Collection of Roses by a French Empress

The Rose Gardens are dived into four rose gardens. The origin came from a gift of a collection of roses by Joséphine de Beauharnais in 1805.

One of the rose gardens contains wild roses. The historic rose garden has 570 varieties of roses and the international rose garden has 60,000 roses of 320 different varieties from France and abroad.

Finally, a rose garden is dedicated to the study and competition for the most beautiful rose in France, a prize awarded each year by a jury.

7. A Vast Lake of 16 Hectares can Indulge in the Pleasures of Boating in the Summer

Parc de La Tête d’Or has a vast lake of 16 hectares. The lake hosts various birds such as ducks, and geese and visitors will also find swans swimming in and basking by the lake.

In the Northern part of the lake tide two wooden islands. Tamarisk Island is accessible only by boat. Remembrance Island, formerly known as Swan Island was converted after plans by the Lyon architect Tony and the 1905 Prix de Rome Sculptor Jean-Baptiste to honour soldiers killed in combat.

 The soldiers’ names are engraved on the outer sides of the walls. An underground corridor provides access to the island.

 9. The Shop in the Parc de la Tête d’ Or has been there for Four Generations

The shop, (La Boutique) has been in the park for four generations. It is open all year long.

Visitors can find everything they want in the shop. Such as Souvenirs, postcards, balloons, toys teddy bears and animal figurines collections.
