Commonly reffered as“the most beautiful balcony in Europe” le Chemin de la Corniche, is located in Luxembourg City .It is the spectacular walls that towers over the old city in the river valley and the big Gate of the Grund dating from 1632.

Placed high up here on the ramparts along the valley of the river Alzette, the Corniche Way is a great place for an amazing stroll.

2. Built by the Spaniards and French

It runs along the Alzette valley on the ramparts that were built by the Spaniards and the French in the 17th century.

It鈥檚 over 300 years old and was the ramparts of the city.

It was part of the fortifications that were protecting Luxembourg, and was built from the Bock Promontory up to the lower part of the Holy Ghost Citadel, 鈥凌辞苍诲别濒濒别苍鈥�.

3.Has Bock Cliff with Fortifications and Cannon Loopholes

The bock cliff has the entrance of the famous Casemates, a 21 kilometers network of the underground passages hewn from solid rock,

Its capable of sheltering thousands of defenders, as well as equipment and horses, it also housed workshops, kitchens, and slaughterhouses.

On the Bock plateau itself are the remains of the old castle, discovered in 1963. There are beautiful views of the suburb of Grund and the Rham Plateau, the old 19th-century barracks, and the big towers and remains of the Wenceslas wall dating from 1390.

 Its ramparts reveal several aristocratic houses and refuges, as well as the ancient convent of the Dominicans and St. Michael’s church (987 CE).

In the suburb of Grund there is a large cluster of buildings with the church and ancient Abbey of Neum眉nster.

 It’s notable for its 17th-century cloister of Limoges, an organ dating from 1720, and a 14th-century “black virgin.” The adjacent buildings are part of the ancient Hospice St.-Jean, founded by Emperor Henri VII, Count of Luxembourg, in 1309.

5. Some of the Wall was Cleared to Disclose Magnificent View

Up to the year 1870 the Corniche had staircases in steep parts which were levelled off only after the dismantling of the fortress.

Moreover the greatest part of the protecting wall with its loopholes was cleared away so as to disclose a superb panorama on the valley of the Alzette, the city district of Grund and the Rham Plateau

6. The Panoramic Lift is Free of Charge

The new lift is made of glass and connects Pescatore Park located in the city Centre to the Pfaffenthal area at the bottom of the Alzette valley.

It can also take one directly across the river, you can see Neim毛nster Abbey.

The ride in the glass elevator features sweeping views of 71m high for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Using the elevator is free of charge.

The elevator is running every day from 5.45 in the morning until 1 o’ clock at night.

In order to be maintained regularly, every first Monday of the month is always out of order from 9.00 am till 5.45am of the following day.

7.One Can Access it Starting from St. Esprit

Once you are walking Luxembourg City you can get to, Le Chemin de la Corniche by either starting from St. Esprit or from the Bock Casemates.

A corniche is a road or walkway built into the side of the mountain, with the terrain steeply rising on one side and falling away on the other. The Chemin de la Corniche is a walking path along the Bock’s sides and offers stellar views of The Grund and the Alzette Valley.

The walk can also starts near St. Michael’s Church and the Schlassbr茅ck Bridge, then winds along the Bock promontory southward, ending near Rue Du St. Esprit and the National Archives building.

8.National History Museum is Located at the Chemin de la Corniche

The Grund is also home to the Natural History Museum with many shops and restaurants situated along the Alzette.

The museum is built in magnificent building with a five story deep hole in the rock leaving pillars and arches.

Then they is also a three story glass box at the bottom and about five fantastic stories on top.
