Top 10 Fascinating Facts about Palace de la Constitution
La Place de la Constitution popularly referred to as “the famous square with the golden statue”, is one of the great meeting points in Luxembourg City.
It is a square found at the centre of Luxembourg City (Ville Haute ) and was put up on the ancient Beck bastion in 1644 and completed in1685.
It’s a memorial site in central Luxembourg holding one of the unique and controversial monuments the “Gëlle Fra” which is a 21-meter-tall granite obelisk and on top stands a gilded bronze statue representing Nike, who according to Luxembourgers is the goddess of victory known as “Queen of Freedom”, holding out a laurel wreath as if placing it upon the head of the nation.
It was built in 1923 to honor the Luxembourgish volunteer soldiers who fought alongside the French army during the war.
The square is located at the highest point in Luxembourg City and visitors can enjoy one of the most privileged views of the capital.
Here, locals and tourists bump into each other either on a normal day during the week or even at events that take place there like the famous Marché de Noel between November and January.
The square is awash with several flags apart from Luxembourg and the European Union. Visiting the Place de la constitution in Luxembourg regardless of the time of year offers various beautiful sceneries for photographers and park lovers.

1.Home to Luxembourg National World War I Commemoration Monument
It host the Gëlle Fra referred to as The Monument of Remembrance or in French Monument du souvenir. It is dedicated to the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the armed forces of the Allied Powers during both World Wars and the Korean War.
The Gëlle Fra was build in 1923 to commemorate the Luxembourgers who perished in the First World War, today it symbolizes freedom and resistance for the Luxembourg people.
2. The Monument Hoists Nike is one of the Unique and Controversial Statues
The centerpiece of the monument is a 21-meter-tall granite obelisk and on top of it stands a gilded bronze statue representing Nike, the goddess of victory, or Queen of Freedom named Friddenskinnigin in Luxembourgish.
It portrays her holding out a laurel wreath as if placing it upon the head of the nation.
There are also two ungilded bronze figures at the foot of the obelisk, representing those Luxembourgish soldiers that volunteered to serve France; one lies at the base of the statue, representing soldiers who died in service of their country, whilst another sits, mourning his dead compatriots.
The sculptor of the three bronze figures was the famous Claus Cito, a native Luxembourger.
3. It Offers a Superb View over the Pétrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge
The square is located at the highest point in Luxembourg City and visitors enjoy one of the most privileged views of the capital.
While the square is just like any other regular square that you find back on each corner in any city, but when you come closer to the border of the square you get an amazing view of the lower part of Luxembourg city and the parc that cross both parts.
This is the first stop on a circular tour of the city. Really nice statue as the focal point, with an outstanding view of Adolphe Bridge and the valley below. Lots of services adjacent to this square, great stop for photos.

Nicknamed the Gëlle Fra in Luxembourgish meaning the ‘Golden Lady’ its a statue found on of the war memorial monument at the constitution square in Luxembourg City.
This is a remarkable tribute to those who fought in World War 1 and World War II. That statue itself stands tall and commands a very unique space with no intrusion.
In fact from the weals around her, there are magnificent views all around. This was another high point at which our walking tour guide felt pride and excitement showing us.
Despite it magnificence it draws admiration as well as critics from the Roman Catholic majority in Luxembourg due to its association with Greek goddess of victory Nike.
7. Great Sceneries for those who Love Photography
It is breathtaking to watch the sunset behind the imposing Spuerkess State Bank building lightly covered by the giant trees of the Pétrusse River Valley and the iconic Adolphe bridge.
As a photographer one will enjoy the intense and joyful colors of spring and the reddish-orange tones of bucolic autumn that are quite fascinating and make photos colorful and unique
8. The venue for Marché de Noel (Luxembourg Christmas Market) between November and January.
It’s one of the venues of the seasonal Christmas markets in Europe a Christmas practice in Europe whose history dates back in 1434.
9. There are World-Class Restaurants and Terraces in the Vicinity
Around and near the shopping center. Many visitors consider the square a nice place in the center of the city with proximity to the city restaurants and terraces offering both local and international cuisine.
10. It was Redeveloped in 2019
In 2019 the Mayor of Luxembourg launched the redevelopment of Place de la Constitution and its environs, creating a pleasant, multi-purpose pedestrianized zone.
The redevelopment included a tourist information center, a shop and refreshments area, and an entry point to the casemates. It had also envisioned the installation of an elevator to access the Pétrusse Valley from Place de la Constitution.
