Kevin Smith is an actor, an American filmmaker, a comedian, a comic book writer, and a Youtuber.

He rose to stardom with a low-budget comedy buddy film clerks, which he directed and produced, and even acted as the character Silent Bob of the Stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob Strike back.

Smith has mostly invested in writing horror films, some of his works include, Red State (2011) and the “comedy horror films “.

1. He was inspired by Richard Linklater’s works

Behind every inspiring idea, there is a model, one can even call it a source that lights a motivation to begin a journey to create something new.

The dynamics of Kevin Smith changed on his 21st birthday when he saw Richard Linklater’s comedy Slacker. Smith was impressed that the movie was set and shot in his hometown of Austin Texas.

This mere idea drives him to dream big, he said “it was the movie that got me off my ass “.

The movie was the starting point of the story that will tell much of his successful life since he had not seen such a movie before he assembled a library of independent filmmakers to source inspiration.

Kevin began making baby steps toward his goal and soon he was attending Vancouver Film School for four months.

It’s here he met lifetime collaborators like Scott Mosier and Dave Klein.

Smith left Vancouver film school halfway through the course as he felt he had grasped much of what he needed to know to proceed.

2. He was majorly financed by the company, Miramax

In today’s world financial support is the crack needed to open the path to letting dreams bloom into a reality and for Smith that aid was offered by, Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob via their company Miramax Dimension film and the Weinstein Company.

His relationship with Harvey Weinstein came colored with bitterness due to the financial failure of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which Smith lamented the failure to lack of marketing.

The two put their differences aside and discussed potential funding for other Smith projects.

In 2016 Weinstein’s combat co-produced Smith’s talk show, Greekung out. Smith named the independent production company he formed for the 2011 film, Red State “The Harvey boys “in Weinstein’s honor.

Weinstein nurtured several writer-directors and Smith was considered to be part of the group he mentored into their career till their success.

3. He produced his movie clerk at a convenience store

During the early stages of initiating his dream, Smith had few resources to work with and that didn’t prevent him from being proactive with his production.

He set his film, Clerks at a convenience store he was working in, borrowing the day-in-life structure from the Spike Lee film, Do the right thing.

While the move is admirable intent to say it wasn’t risky and shot at by difficulties Smith maxed out more than a miner of his credit card and even sold most of his treasured comic book collection.

He Did this to raise $ 27,575 to make the film while saving money and casting friends and acquaintances in most roles.

Despite all the challenges he faced during the production of making the clerk, it won the filmmaker trophy in 1994.

His movie attracted a lot of attention and it was through this movie he made the acquaintance of Harvey Weinstein who offered to buy his movie.

In May 1994, the movie went to the Cannes international film festival where it won, the Prix dedicated la Jeunesse and the international critics week prize.

4. He was uncredited in the film Coyote Ugly

The writer faced quite a several roadblocks in his career, in 1997 New Line hired Smith to rewrite, Overnight delivery which was expected to be a blockbuster teen movie.

Joey Lauren Adam, Smith then girlfriend almost took the role of ivy in the movie but unfortunately, it was instead she lost out to Reese Witherspoon.

The movie was released in April 1998 and unfortunately, Smith wasn’t credited for his contributions.

He stated that the only scene that used his dialogue was the opening scene, a reference to long-time Smith friend Bryan Johnson.

5. He wrote his comic books

His love for comic books drove Smith in writing his comic books, he wrote Jay and Silent Bob. He followed this with a Blunt man and a chronic story in Oni Double feature #12. He continued authoring more and even unleashed his series Clerks comics.

The first was Clerks: The Comic Book, which narrated Randal’s attempts to Corner the market on Star Wars toys. The second one was Clerks: Holiday special, which tells Dante and Randal to discover that Santa Claus Lives in an apartment between the quick Stop and RST video. The third of this series was Clerks: The lost Scene, showing what happened inside Poston’s funeral Parlour.

The last of the Clerk series was later animated in the TV series style and included as an extra on the 10th Anniversary Clerks DVD.

Smith further wrote more comics such as the ministries Chasing Dogma, which unveils the story of Jay and Silent Bob between the Films Chasing Amy and Dogma

His stories have all been collected in Tales from the Clerks, they were collected first by Image Comics in three separate Volumes, and in 1999, Smith won a Harvey Award, for Best New Talent in comic books.

6. He was an actor

Smith wasn’t just gifted in writing comic books but was also famously remembered for his role as Silent Bob in Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma among others.

He made an appearance in the horror film Scream 3 and featured along with Jason Mewes in several Degrassi: The Next Generation episodes.

Smith appeared in Cameo’s role in the film Daredevil as Coroner Jack Kirby. He also voiced the moose in the CG1 cartoon Doogal.

7. He has a podcast network

Smith has a strong online presence; he first went online in late 1995 with a website known as The View Askewniverse.

He also runs an online blog “My boring -Ass Life”. And its contents were published in a book by the same title.

He began a regular comedy podcast called SModcast on February 5, 2007, together with Scott Mosier. SModcast has since expanded into a network of podcasts referred to SModcast the SModcast podcast which began in 2010.

Kevin Smith premiered his HULU exclusive weekly series Spoilers, which was described as “an anti-movie review series”.

8. He has a comic book store

Smith’s love for comic books is the theme expressed through his life works and this drove him to establish and operate his comic bookstore named after his Jay and Silent Bob characters, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.

He purchased the original store for $30,000 in January 1997 using the money he earned from Clerks.

The store was later sold to the Monmouth St. property and it’s managed by Smith’s long-time friend and associate Brayan Johnson, who appeared in Smiths’ film as Steve Dave.

In 2009, the west coast store closed, leaving only the east coast store as Smiths’ only operating store.

9. He Married at Skywalker ranch

Smith got married to Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, the two crossed each other’s path during an interview for USA Today.

What makes the couple’s wedding interesting is the venue they used to hold their wedding, the Skywalker ranch is a movie ranch, and the workplace of Film director George Lucas.

The ranch is built like a fortress and is believed to have the best theatre in the world. The two couples got married on April 25, 1999, and had a daughter whom they named Harley Quinn Smith named after the characters from batman.

 10. He co-founded the way Foundation

Smith is an advocate of women’s rights and he is the co-founder of The Wayne foundation which is a former charity organization supporting women affected by human trafficking and exploitation.

In 2019, he denoted some of his previously won Jerseys to be auctioned off for charity.

He has also engaged in other philanthropic works, in 2018 Vancouver Film Scholl announced three Kevin Smith scholarships, and thirteen partial scholarships were awarded, and funded by Smith.
