Maria Elena Salinas is a journalist and Spanish-language news anchor. She was previously a co-anchor of Noticiero Univision, Univision’s nightly newscast, and Aqu y Ahora, the network’s news magazine. Salinas is the “most recognized Hispanic journalist in the United States,” according to Univision mostly known for her works in both television and radio broadcasting, as co-anchor of the popular Spanish-language newscast Noticiero Univision and as a radio commentator for Radio Unica. 1. Salinas was born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrants
Maria Elena Salinas was born in the California city of Los Angeles on December 30, 1954, to Mexican immigrants José Luis Cordero Salinas(father) and Luz Tiznado(mother). Her birthplace qualified her for citizenship in the United States. Her ancestry, however, allowed her to identify with two countries the first being the United States and the other Mexico, where she spent her early childhood years.
2. She began her career in media as a reporter for KMEX-34
In 1981, Salinas began her journalism career as a reporter for KMEX-34 television in Los Angeles. Her perceptive reporting on the impact of daily news on Southern California’s rapidly rising Hispanic community swiftly gained her the respect that led to her appointment as anchor chair of Noticiero Univision in 1987.
3. Salinas is widely recognized as the “voice of Hispanic America”
Salinas, a renowned presence in Hispanic media with a global audience of millions of viewers, has used her notoriety to speak for and empower the Latino community. She is the official spokesperson for Ya Es Hora, a national civic engagement campaign that has been recognized with a Peabody Award for helping motivate Hispanics to participate in US political dialogue. Her most recent prime-time special, Entre el abandono y el rechazo, addressed the tremendous departure of Central American children to the United States and earned her a Peabody Award, a Walter Cronkite Award, and a Gracie Award. In 2000, Salinas launched a scholarship in her name to be awarded to a Hispanic journalism student interested in pursuing a career in Spanish-language media.
4. She is most known for her work as a Univision news anchor
Salinas worked for Univision the fifth largest television network in the United States and the main Spanish-language broadcasting corporation for more than 35 years, making her one of the longest-serving female anchors of a national newscast. For three decades, she co-anchored “Noticiero Univision” from Miami with Jorge Ramos, but she left the Spanish-language news powerhouse at the end of 2017.

According to her biographer, Salinas has interviewed more world leaders, dictators, and political figures than any other female journalist, including most U.S. presidents since Jimmy Carter, Pope John Paul II, Vicente Fox, Manuel Noriega, Augusto Pinochet, Alberto Fujimori, and the infamous but “enigmatic Mexican rebel leader Sub-Comandante Marcos. She has also conducted interviews with Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, and Gloria Estefan.

Her charitable involvement includes supporting the Maria Elena Salinas Scholarship, which is given to college students who want to work in Spanish news broadcasting, serving on the board of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and cooperating with a number of Latino civic engagement organizations. 7. She has received various honors and accolades for her journalism and philanthropic work
Salinas received a Peabody Award, a Walter Cronkite Award, and a Gracie Award in 2014 for her news and documentary special “Entre el abandono y el rechazo,”. She received the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California’s Broadcast Legend Award in 2014. She got an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2012, together with her co-anchor Jorge Ramos. At the 11th Annual Hispanic Television Summit, hosted by Schramm Marketing Group, Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News honored her with the Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2013.
Salinas has received the National Organization for Women’s Intrepid Award for her philanthropic work. In 2017, Salinas delivered commencement addresses at American University and California State University, Fullerton, and was awarded an honorary degree by the latter. The Latin Recording Academy honored her in 2020 with the Leading Ladies of Entertainment award.

Salinas is dedicated to enabling Latinos to make positive changes in their lives and communities. She uses advocacy journalism to empower innumerable people on subjects such as health, education, and civic engagement, to name a few. Recognizing the transforming potential of education, she established a scholarship fund in her honor for college students interested in careers in broadcasting.
9. She is the author of the memoir I Am My Father’s Daughter: Living A Life Without Secrets
Salinas explains her family history and upbringing in her memoir, I Am My Father’s Daughter: Living a Life Without Secrets, as well as her admission into journalism and ascent to prominence in a field that was historically devoid of minority women in positions of significance and power. Throughout, Salinas tells many stories about her professional journalism career, her personal problems with motherhood and family, and her dedication to the Hispanic community that she serves through her writing and reporting. Regina M. Beard of Library Journal wrote that Salinas’ book provides a “credible introduction to Spanish-language broadcast journalism and may serve as an inspirational story as well.”
10. She is a co-founder of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists
Salinas is a founding member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. dedicated to the growth of Hispanic journalists in the United States. The organization today has over 2,300 members in the United States and Puerto Rico.
