Where to Eat Poke in London

It might come as a surprise to those from developed countries, but poke isn’t easily accessible as a meal in many parts of the world. Visiting major cities, like London, gives many the opportunity to try this fusion cuisine for themselves.

Poke originated in Hawaii. The word itself actually just means “cube of fish” and was used to refer to scraps that were left behind on fishing boats. It merged with Japanese cuisine and became the raw fish and rice bowls that we enjoy today.

Here’s where to eat poke in London.

Island Poké Soho in London

If you’re ever in doubt about where to find a specific cuisine, you can usually count on Soho to have it. Not only is it one of the trendiest restaurant hubs in London, it’s also great for nightlife, shopping and guided walking tours.

Island Poke is just off of Regent Street, which is the main shopping strip.

Island Poke is the most reasonably priced poke you’ll find in London. The ingredients are always fresh, the flavors are superb and the service can’t be faulted. The success of this spot recently allowed them to open their second location in Canary Wharf.

I usually have an issue with poke portions in London, I find many places to cut corners when scooping proteins in particular. Island Poke are generous all round, I wasn’t able to finish the bowl. Five stars!

Black Roe in London

If you leave Island Poke and cross over Regent Street heading west, you’ll find yourself in Mayfair. Black Roe is in Mayfair, just off Regent Street as well.

Black Roe is not a poke house but rather a Japanese eatery. It’s modern Asian cuisine, and it’s not cheap but it is delicious.

The menu is comprised of traditional Japanese dishes, sushi, poke and tasting plates. Their tasting plates can be ordered as vegetarian or meat-filled; vegan adjustments can be made where necessary.

They have a few poke bowls on their menu with different fresh fish options. The bowls are beautiful, almost too good to eat. You’ll find them all over Instagram if you look this restaurant up!

Honi Poke in London

If you’re a fan of Ahi Tuna then you’ll want to make Honi your go-to for poke in London.

Honi is a faster version of poke, great as a grab-and-go meal between guided walking tours or a quick bite before a show at the Palace Theatre situated just around the corner.

They have a set menu with bowl options, or you can build your own from the base up. What customers love about Honi is that they allow half & half bases, instead of forcing you to pick a full potion of sushi rice, brown rice, quinoa or greens.

Their house sushi bowl is currently one of the most frequently ordered items for Uber Eats in this area.

Polú Poké in London

Shoreditch is another neighborhood in London where you can find practically any cuisine. I spend a lot of time here, and I have a love/hate relationship with Polú Poke.

Their bowl portions can be inconsistent; it depends very much on who serves you that particular day. You can tell the staff have been briefed to save fish and be very careful with over portioning, and some take it very seriously. £3 is also a little steep to double up your protein, in my opinion.

That being said, the food is always delicious and of impeccable freshness. And I will continue to support Polú Poke as they are an environmentally friendly establishment as well. Bring your own bowl or container and you’ll get a discount on your purchase, every time.

Lords of Poké in London

Good old poke in good old Paddington. This borough on the Thames sits just next to Bayswater, which is a short walk through to Hyde Park.

If you need a romantic date idea while in London, skip dining in at Lords of Poke and get your bowls to go instead. Take them through to the park and enjoy a picnic on the grass.

You might get another opportunity to eat Lords of Poke while roaming through London. They have a food truck that they move through the city, serving fresh bowls until they run out of stock for the day.

Tombo in London

The Natural History Museum of London is situated in South Kensington, and is free to enter and enjoy. Yes, free things to do in London include many, many museums!

Tombo is right across the street from the museums ice rink (unfortunately this section requires payment). It’s a godsend of a Japanese eatery with multiple menus that will have you in awe.

They do a poke bar, a match bar, a soup bar and a Japanese entree menu offering curries and noodles. A fabulous spot to dine when not everyone in the group is in the mood for a poke bowl.
