Nymans is an English garden to the east of Handcross, and in the civil parish of Slaugham in West Sussex, England. It was developed in the late 19th century by three generations of the Messel family and was brought to renown by Leonard Messel.
Nymans Garden is the origin of many sports, selections, and hybrids. Leonard Messel bought the estate and made it a place for family life and entertainment with an art and crafts-inspired garden. In 1915 Colonel Leonard Messel, Leonards’s son succeded to the property and replaced the house with the picturesque stone manor designed by Sir Walter Trapper.
In 1947, the house suffered disastrous fire which survives as a garden ruin. Leonard Messel’s daughter and her husband rebuilt the house and became their home which was left to the National Trust in 1953, after the death of Leonard Messel. Here are 10 facts about Nymans.
1. Nymans garden holds one of the largest collections of South American plants in the UK
The garden holds a collection of magnolias,eucryphias, camellias, and rhododendrons together with one of the largest collections of South American plants in the UK.
It’s famous for its lavish displays of frothy blossom, camellias, and spring bulbs. cherry trees create an enchanting atmosphere and a profusion of wisteria including one that is over a hundred years old. It spans 13 hectares with a collection of argentian plants which can be formed in the walled garden.
2. Its a grade II listed garden in historic England
Nymans is a grade II garden for its significant plant collection. It is one of the most interesting collections of plants in the National Trust and it holds 3 plant heritage collections. Nymans work closely with the National Trusts plant conservation center in Devon to ensure the survival of their rare, wild collected, and significant plants.
Their organization is pivotal in preserving its plant history and the survival of plants. Its collection of 37 different cultivators of mainly trees and shrubs and a great history of plant hunters.
3. It has a cafe called the pavilion cafe
A pavilion cafe is a must-see place in Nymans gardens. Its located at the top of the garden, right by the entrance which opens at 10 am and serves tempting treats and hot and cold meals throughout the day. Its menu has a variety of dishes including unique dishes reflecting the spirits of Nymans. lighter snacks made with seasonal produce are also on offer and its deliciously tempting array of cakes and ice creams.
4. Nymans plant Heritage collections.
There is 3 plant Heritage collection in Nymans gardens namely: the National collection of Erica and Calluna, the Nymans collection, and the Harold Chamber collection. The collection is known to be unique and can be enjoyed throughout the garden all year round.
Nyman’s collection has 37 varieties of mainly trees and shrubs, Erica and Calluna’s collection have cultivators directly connected to a person, family, garden, or place and the Harold chamber collection consists of plants that are named after hunter, Harold Chamber.
5. Nymans suffered a disastrous fire in 1947 and was rebuilt
In 1947, the house was destroyed by serious fire with treasures worth thousands of pounds destroyed in the flames. Work started to replace the house with what was really a clever reproduction of a building that had originally been built in the 14th century but had been added to until the 16th century which took 10 years to rebuild the house.
6. Today Nymans is under the care of the National Trust
After the death of Leonard Messel in 1953, Nymans was left to the National Trust with 275 acres of woodland, becoming one of the first gardens taken on by the Trust. It’s a grade II listed National Trust garden for all seasons and is set around a romantic house and ruins. One of the most popular National Trustsbookshops is found in Nyman at the center of the garden.
7. Nymans is renowned as a tourist destination
Nymans is one of the best gardens in the United Kingdom and apart from that, it’s also renowned as a tourist destination. Its plant heritage collection is one of the best ways to enjoy a visit to Nymans.
The Pavillion cafe in the garden is also an ideal spot to order some snacks, and cold drinks, and its tempting treats of hot and cold meals. The walled garden is famous for its lavish displays and has a park with walks running down to the River Ouse in open dawn dusk. The garden has a car park open from 9.45 am to 6.00 pm.
8. Springtime in the Nymans Woodland
Spring is a glamorous time of the year in the woodland with blossom-filling trees and hedges and wildflowers emerging. Woodland consists of fresh green buds, trees, and flowers that blossom, attracting insects and also in turn attracting a variety of birds, bees, and butterflies. The woods become awash with casting colors of white, blue purple, and yellow.
9. Nyman has been home to several generations of the Messel family
There have been generations of Messels at Nymans since the 1890s, with the first Messel to live at Nyman being Ludwig Messel who bought the 600 acres of the estate where he did gardening and lived with his family.
He had six children with his wife Annie, the first being Leonard who inherited the estate in 1915. Leonard with his wife transformed Nymans into the house we see today.
Their children Linley, Oliver, and Anne spent much of their childhood at Nymans, and in the 1940s and 1950s, Oliver became a famous theatre designer who designed the garden. Anne and her second husband the 6th Earl of Rosse also lived in the garden and today some members of the Messel family live in the garden.
10. The Messel family at Nyman were involved in the Queen’s coronation
Messel family boasts a number of artistic influences including Maud’s father, a cartoonist for the political publication, and Oliver an artist and writer with a keen collection of art. Oliver schooled at Eton and then joined the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
He then trained in the studio of portrait artist John Wells with one of his best production being the Russian ballet”The sleeping beauty” performed in 1946 at the Royal Opera House. Additional designs to the ballet included “Comus” in 1940 which was released from war duties and Home to the Queen performed in 1953 for the Queen’s coronation.
