Floors castle lies on the beautiful Scottish borders, renowned for its gentle hills, woodlands, and riverscapes. It sits outside the market town of Kelso with its famous abbey and the river Tweed on the doorstep.

Floors Castle is one of the best when it comes to fairy tale architecture. The Rorburghe estate covers approximately 52000 acres of the borders ranging from the grassy slopes of Cheviot Hills to the fertile land of the Tweed valley. The kind of farming carried over the estates is equally diverse to the variety of the product considering its variety of topography.

The farming mainly is carried out by tenants because most part of the estate lets. The estate also farms on its own, since 1721 the land seen around the castle is mainly grown crops like wheat for bread making and oilseed rape used to make vegetable oil for cooking . Crops are varied with seasons to avoid the buildup of pests and to keep the land healthy .they also practice animal farming.

2. Floors were designed by Architect William Adam and William Henry

Floors cattle was designed by leading Edinburgh architect William Adam in the year 1721for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe. Floors was originally a plain but symmetrical Georgian country house that was built on the site of an existing building called the house of Floris.

The 6th Duke invited leading architect William Playfair in 1837and 1847 and to remodel the castle. Playfair was determined to create a fairytale castle since floors were his important private commission. The result of the building is seen today.

3. Floors castle has been featured in a movie

In 1984 the castle was featured in the movie Greystoke: the legend o Tarzan lord of Apes. It was also featured in ‘million dollars American Princess’, which was filmed in London in Uk and Newyork in the USA.

Floors are believed to be the largest inhabited house in Scotland which was opened to the public in 1977. It’s one of the most iconic pieces of the Scottish architect and as a dwelling. It has a few rivals in the UK. In addition to the castle being a visitor attraction, it is also the firsthand foremost home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe.

5. Floors castle Hollytree

The castle has a holly tree near the banks of Tweed which is said to mark the spot where King James 11 was killed. in 1460 King James 11 summoned a great Scottish army to lay siege to Roxburgh castle which was long occupied by English forces on August 3rd.

The Queen’s arrival was honored with a salute from the siege cannons who fired upon Roxburgh castles. The king was nearby and was mortally wounded when the cannon exploded. The holly tree was planted on the spot where King James 11 died in his honor.

6. The Queen’s house

Queen Victoria visited the floors castle in 1867, where she took tea in a small summer house filled with tiles adjacent to a vast glass corridor. There were seven other glass houses set but only the summer house survives to this day. The house sits in the middle of the walled garden of the floors castle. It was constructed as a memorial to Queen Victoria’s visit.

7. A biomass boiler was installed at the castle

In 2008, a new 720 kW biomass boiler was installed in one of the farm buildings on the floors home to supply heating for the castle and gardens. It was one of the 1st of its kind to be installed in a stately home in Scotland.

It has delivered significant savings in carbon emissions and also replaced the oil-fired heating which consumed oil and the boiler uses wood. This has resulted in savings of 500000kg of co2 per year, the equivalent of heating 10000 houses in a day.

In 2013, the second phase of the biomass boiler program was completed which included the installation of heating systems to 16 cottages on floors home farm and estate office.

8. The 19th-century Romanticist Revamp(1837-1847).

In the mid 19th century the 6th Duke of Roxburghe invited William Playfair another famous architect after architect William Adam to remodel the castle. This job was one of the important commissions to Playfair which he did to his perfection that he didn’t disappoint.

  He designed the castles with dozens of pale turrets, stepped towers, and golden stone in a symmetrical, sweeping work of Georgian romanticism.

9. Floors castles ground nationally listed as one of the most significant parks in Scotland

Floors castle gardens are a showpiece of seasonal interest and inspire new creations. It has a lovely garden with its French-style pattern that was created to observe the new millennium and features the interviewing initials of the 10th Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe.

It has a beautiful woodland garden which is interesting to explore with its lovely mix of mature hardwood trees, open glades, and woodland shrubs. There’s an adventure playground and Terrace Cafe where all visitors are welcomed to try their dishes.

10. The 8th Duchess of the Castle was an American

 Mary Goelet was a wealthy American heiress. Mary, known as May, met the 8th Duke in 1895 at a marriage ceremony to the Duke Marlborough.

The 8th Duke and May got married in 1903 and later started living at Floors Castle. She rid the building of its old furniture and furnished it beautifully. She lived between London and Floors Castle until her death in 1937.
