Saltaire was built in 1851 by Victorian philanthropist, Sir Titus Salt. He built this fascinating village with shops, a church, a working mill, schools, community for his workers on the bank of river Aire.

The houses were well equipped with tap water, bathhouses, a hospital to ensure good health, and educational library to provide educational material, reading rooms, and a gymnasium to provide fitness services.

This project became one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in West Yorkshire in England and an anchor point of the European route of industrial heritage.

Today Saltire remains to be an amazing village with industrial heritage, there are Italian-inspired buildings, and Roberts Park. Robert took over the village when Sir Titus Salt died.

1. Saltaire has a salt mill

Salt Mill- Steve Daniels-

The mill was built in 1853 by Sir Titus Salt after he decided to move his salt mill from Bradford city to the outskirts next to river Aire. The salt mill used to be a textile mill until the 20th century when it was closed.

The mill is always open from 10 am until 5.30 pm and 6 pm on weekends, it runs open for 7days a week. The mill has remained a dominating haven to explore. The mill now houses an art gallery, and a bookshop with well-displayed books, and gift shops.

2. It has an Italian church

The church was built using the Italian style between the years 1856 to 1859. The church was designed by Bardford a Saltaire architect in partnership with Lockwood and Mawson.

Local firms were contracted for the construction work. The church is estimated to have cost 16,000 Euros, having a capacity of 600 people.

Sir Titus built the church to cater to the spiritual need of his workers. After his death, a Mausoleum was added where his body was laid. The building is now famous and is used for holding weddings in west Yorkshire.

3. Saltaire Village has a Victorian House

The Victorian House represents the 19th-century hierarchy of workers’ homes. The house was designed and built by Lockwad and Maswon in 1854 and 1868.

Sir Titus built the huge house to cater to the housing needs of his workers. The workers were allocated to the house according to the hierarchy. The managers were given large houses while other workers were given cottages,

The house has become an attraction site to walk around admiring the Victorian architectural design and learn and explore more about its culture and history.

4. The village has the most picturesque bookshops

The Saltaire village book shop is huge offering good space for book lovers. The lovers will fall in love with it. The books are always up to date making it easy to access books on offer.

The bookshop has hidden gems, beautiful second-hand books, pre-loved paperwork, and also new publication. The books are well displayed with a spectacular arrangement.

The shops have a variety of books covering cooking, gardening, philosophy, and fiction books. it also has a children’s section full of children’s fun books.

5. It has Roberts park

The park is 14 acres and is bounded to the south by the River Aire. The park was designed by William Gay from 1814 to1893, it was officially opened in 1871.

During the Victorian times, ladies would promenade through the upper garden and games would be hosted in the park. Nowadays concerts and many other activities are being carried out in the park.

Visitors can stroll around the garden admiring the old Bandstand and see the Sir Titus statue. There is a nice cafe with different selections of drinks where one can enjoy drinks as they admire the park, watch cricket games and children climb up the alpca.

6. Saltaire has a salt beer factory

The salt factory began as a simple place to brew great crafty beers but later evolved into something greater. Its design provides interior design for a 20-hectolitre beer factory housed in an icon architecture.

Visitors get to enjoy handcrafted beer and learn each brewing process, you can follow through to see how beer is made from the start of processing raw material to the dispensing of the beer at the bar.

At night it’s transformed into a beer hall with super Dj’S playing music, also there is live music an experience you can’t miss.

7. Saltaire offers a relaxing boat trip

Boat rides are the most relaxing. If you visit Saltaire from April to October you can’t afford to miss the boat experience. it’s 30 minutes relaxing cruise along with the leads- Liverpool canal.

The boat tours run from 11 am up to 5 pm, charging 4 Euros per person. The boats have a comfortable cabin and a covered deck. you can also take amazing pictures to commemorate the boat experience.

8. Saltire Offers an amazing food experience

One of the amazing things to enjoy at Saltaire is healthy, tasteful food. The place is full of lovely restaurants and cafes to fulfill your food desires.

Saltaire offers Yorkshire traditional baked foods like vegan sandwiches, vegan sausage rolls, and vegan Thai bake full of spicy goodness. These meals will help fuel your energy to keep exploring the village.

9. It has 1853 Gallery

The 1853 gallery is home to the David Hockey art collection. The ground floor of the mill houses a permanent exhibition of David Hockney works.

There is gallery 2 that hosts a collection of Henry Marvel Carr R.A called Textile Process and Simon Palmaer’s collection of Saltaire paintings and drawings.

The Saltaire exhibition has a magnificent exhibition that explores Saltaire’s history from 1853 to the present day.

10. Saltire has local shops

Saltaire has many independent shops to buy beautiful products from. One famous Radstudio offers modern functional and fun gifts and homewares.
