Powis Castle was built by Welsh princes in the early 13th century and it has maintained much of its exterior impressiveness whereas the interior has been redecorated several times.

It was initially the stately home of the noble Herbert and Clive families, which now the castle and the Clive Museum houses pieces from India. The castle changed ownership several times, whereas in 1587 sir Edward Herbert, purchased the castle and the estate.

His generations transformed Powys into an elegant manor house. The changes happened repeatedly with each generation adding to the impressive collection of the paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries.

In the year 1644, the castle was occupied by parliamentary forces during the civil war. The monarchy was restored in the year 1660 when the castle underwent extensive rebuilding and refurbishment. 

In the 1680s, the Clives employed Architect William Winde who did the complete refurbishment of the castle. Queen Victoria visited the Castle tour through England and Wales in 1832. Here are some of the interesting facts about the Castle.

The gardens of Powys castle is one of the most iconic bizarre gardens in Britain spreading over 26 acres, which displays eventual perfection in the landscaping.

It has the yew trees which are some of the oldest and largest in Britain trimmed to perfection and often providing umbrella-like shelter with benches. The castle is built high over the gardens with steps (terraces) down the garden level resembling very much a scene from a fairy tale.

Besides, you could watch deer roaming around freely in the deer park, and still, you could find peacocks wandering around lawns and gardens.

The Powis castle was originally built in the mid-13th-century by-Welsh Prince Gruffud Up Gwenwynwyn. Its ownership changed over the years till the 1680s when William Herbert  1st Marques of Powis took over. William Herbert employed architect William Winde to develop a series of terraces and formal grass slopes against the south-facing ridge below the castle.

William kept on working on the gardens where he made a flat land at the foot of the terraces and a water garden in the Dutch style. He built Italian Renaissance terraces and a medieval deer park above the ancient castle. From 1730 to 1803, William Emes helped in improvements to the estates.

He planted a ridge to the castle’s south, endorsing the terraces and the Dutch water garden. He planted many fine oaks that survive to date. From Robert Clive in the early 1800s to lady Violet in the early 20th century, the gardens were transformed into a paradise in Wales, where major improvements were made.

The Castle has terraces, parks, gardens, and fine furnishings. It’s an amazing collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries where each item has an interesting story to tell. 8. It hosted a school

From 1939 -to 1946 Powis castle played a host to pupils from Ashford Welsh Girls School who were evacuated from their school during world war 11. George Herbert,4th Earl of Powis invited the pupils who were governors at the school at the time the outbreak of the war happened. The castle also played as a host to evacuees from Merseyside, land girls, and prisoners of war.

9. The original owner was Owain the prince of Powys.

Powis Castle was built in the 13th century by a Welsh prince, Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, of the kingdom of Powys where his son Owain was raised to the peerage as Owen de la pole,1st lord of Powis. The castle was purchased by Edward herbert younger son of the Earl of Pembroke in the late 16th century. Its ownership changed over the years till in the early 20th century.

The Clive museum is housed at Powis Castle. This museum contains a large collection of items collected in India from the early 17th to 19th century. It contains over 300 items including the famous tent of Tipu Sultan collected by the British from China.

There’s a pair of oriental slippers which were owned by Tipu Sultan made of leather which is decorated with gold thread. There is also a head cap with gold and jewels from the Tipu Sultan.

Powis Castle is known for its formal gardens and its interiors thus being described as “The most magnificent” in Wales. The castle is under the care of the National Trust.
