John Enoch Powell was a Member of Parliament and British politician. Powell was known for his speech on the non-white immigrants entering Britain and for opposing Britain’s entry into the European Economic Community. Powell, whose parents were school teachers of Welsh descent, was born on June 16, 1912, in Birmingham, England.

Powell initially attended King’s Norton Grammar School for Boys before proceeding to King Edward’s School in Birmingham. Powell attended Trinity College in Cambridge. At the age of 25 years, Powell joined the Australia’s University of Sydney and became a professor of Greek.

Powell won a parliamentary seat as a Conservative in 1950. He gradually rose through several posts and served as Minister of health from 1960 to 1963. In 1965, Powell wanted to be at the helm of the Conservative party and challenged Edward Heath for the post. Powell was not successful in securing the party leadership.

On April 20, 1968, Powell brought up the British race question in what is referred to as his infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech.  Powell argued that immigrants from Africa, Pakistan, India, and West India were becoming too many in London and in the Midlands ghettos. These immigrants, Powell stated, could claim citizenship due to their Commonwealth status. Powell requested to have the immigrants voluntarily repatriated to prevent what he was referring to as a race war.

1. Powell predicted a Second World War

By 1930, Powell did not expect the peace realized after World War 1 to prevail.  After World War II broke out, Powell returned home bringing a Russian dictionary with him.

He predicted that Russians would be important for survival. During the war, Powell served in the army and rose through the ranks moving from private to brigadier.

2. Powell suspected the United States wanted to destroy Britain

During World War II as Powell was fighting in the war, he was convinced that the US was a bigger enemy to the UK than Japan or Germany. In 1943, he wrote home expressing the same sentiments indicating that one of the objectives of the US was to destroy the UK.

3. Powell was mistaken for a spy on two different occasions

In a book titled The Roman: The Life of Enoch Powell, it states that Powell was jaundiced during the war and refused to go back home. He told his parents that he was ‘yellow all over. As a result, Powell was mistaken for a Japanese spy.

On a separate occasion, a guard heard Powell singing Horst Wessel Lied, the Nazi anthem, and put ended up putting Powell on the guard.

4. Before joining the Conservative Party, Powell for the Voted Labour

In 1945, most people were angry about the Munich agreement and like Powell, voted for the Labour Party. In 1947, on realizing that India was gaining its independence, Powell became upset because he thought he could become the Viceory of India.

He voted for Labour (like most people) in 1945 because he was angry about the previous Conservative policy (namely, the Munich Agreement) but soon joined the party. He was appalled in 1947 when Indian independence was becoming a reality since he wanted to be

5. Powell began losing confidence in Britain

Powell was strongly against the Royal Titles Bill and in 1953, he gave what he considered his best speech. Powell believed the bill changed the United Kingdom’s way of doing things as it curbed the use of the word British.

Powell’s faith in Britain further decreased with the removal of the British troops from the Suez Canal. Once the troops were removed from the canal, Powell objected to Britain retaking the region.

6. Powell advocated for restrictions on immigration

Powell attended a committee meeting in the spring of 1956 where he advocated for immigration restrictions. Powell was quoted later as saying immigration restrictions would require a change in law and the time for that had not yet come.

He defended his remarks by stating that he was speaking out of loyalty to the government.

7. Powell was more multifaceted than his Rivers of Blood speech implied

From reading his Rivers of Blood speech, it would appear that Powell was a complex person. The speech may have placed Powell on the right side of politics but he was also known to have voted in favor of homosexuality between consenting adults and against capital punishment.

8. Powell wanted Britain to take responsibility for the Hola Massacre in Kenya

Eleven detainees were clubbed to death in Kenya, in 1959. The guards beat the detainees to death in an attempt to force them to work. Powell rejected the idea that some forms of treatment were acceptable in certain regions.  

Powell called for Britain to uphold the highest standards in its acceptance of blame in the matter.

9. Powell’s infamous Rivers of Blood speech in 1968

Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech was based on the effects of unrestricted immigration. Believing it would increase racial tensions, Edward Heath fired Powell a day he made the speech. Powell’s dismissal only made the speech more popular. Racial attacks occurred after the Times and the Telegraph condemned the speech.

A number of people including Nigel Hastilow supported Powell’s sentiments. In 2007, Hastilow resigned after saying that Powell was right.

10. Powell supported the war but was against the use of nuclear weapons

It is said that Powell was in favor of the conflict in the Falklands and this made him pro-war. In 1990, Powell opposed the Iraq conflict as Kuwait was not considered a British ally and Britain did not concern itself with the Middle East. Nonetheless, Powell later opposed the use of nuclear weapons.

Powell died on February 8, 1998, in London at the age of 85. His legacy was a little puzzling. Most people claim he was a racist although he seemed to have a completely different side to him. Nonetheless, he changed how people viewed immigration and racism. There are still discussions on whether or not it was for the better.
