Liechtenstein, officially known as the Principality of Liechtenstein is a German-speaking microstate located in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland.
It is a semi-constitutional monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein. Being a country in Europe, Liechtenstein’s culture is typically and directly derived from the European influences
This is inclusive of language, spirituality and art. However, it is good to note that the locals of Liechtenstein get quite insulted when travellers, ignorant or otherwise, refer to them as Swiss, Austrian or German. This is because they are proud of their independent nation and take get pride to be associated with it.
The country is a highly religious state.
1. Stephanie Vogt
Stephanie Vogt is a Liechtensteinerin professional tennis player who has won nine singles and six doubles titles on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tour in her career.
On 14th October 2013, she reached her best singles ranking of world number 140 and on 21st October 2013, she peaked at world number 128 in the doubles rankings.
Vogt made her debut for the Liechtenstein Fed Cup team in 2006, managing to accumulate an overall record of 14-9.
2. Mario Frick

Mario K. Frick is a former Head of Government of Liechtenstein and attorney-at-law.
At the time of his election in 1993, he was the world’s youngest Head of Government at only 28 years old. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Liechtenstein entered the European Economic Area after a successful referendum in 1995 and experienced economic growth.
However, his regime also faced problems in its foreign relations, such as a dispute with the Czech Republic which began in 1992 over the confiscation of Prince Hans Adam’s estates in 1945, and a 2001 dispute with Germany in the International Court of Justice over royal property confiscated in order to pay war debts.
By the time his term as Prime Minister was coming to an end, Frick was notably prominent in the political controversy surrounding the constitutional referendum in 2003, whereby it was proposed that the ruling Prince be given wider powers. A number of other measures were also proposed.
Frick led the opposition to the proposed changes which were subsequently approved by the electorate nevertheless.
3. Andreas Wenzel
Andreas Wenzel is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Liechtenstein, active from 1976 to 1988.
Born in Planken, he was the overall World Cup champion in 1980, the same season where his older sister Hanni won the women’s overall title. He also won two season titles in the combined event, in 1984 and 1985.
Wenzel competed in four Winter Olympics and won two Olympic medals and four World Championship medals, including one gold.
One of the top five-event racers of his era, he finished his World Cup career with 14 victories, 48 podiums, and 122 top ten finishes.
4. Erhard Berner
Erhard-Heinrich Berner was a highly decorated General major in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He commanded several divisions which ultimately led to him being a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.
The Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.
Unfortunately, in 1945, Berner was captured by Soviet troops and was held until 1955.
5. Wolfgang Haas
Wolfgang Haas is the first archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vaduz in Liechtenstein. He was ordained as a priest as well as incardinated in Chur on April 7th, 1974.
At the request of the bishop of Chur Johannes Vonderach, Haas was appointed to the position of coadjutor bishop of Chur on March 25th, 1988. On May 22nd, 1990, Haas then became bishop of Chur.
On December 2nd, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the archbishop of the newly created Archdiocese of Vaduz.
Haas is known for his friendly relations with and his support for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.
6. Adrian Hasler
Adrian Hasler is chief of the Liechtenstein National Police and the current Prime Minister of Liechtenstein. He is a trained economist.
After leaving school at the Liechtenstein Gymnasium, he studied business administration at the University of St. Gallen.
He was then elected in 2001 as a Progressive Citizens’ Party member of the Landtag of Liechtenstein.
In March 2004, he resigned to become the new police chief and on 1st April 2004, he dismissed the interim police chief Martin Meyer and later dismissed the deputy chief.
In 2012, he was selected as the FBP candidate for Prime Minister and the party actually won the 2013 Parliamentary elections.
7. Julia Hassler

Julia Hassler is a swimmer from Liechtenstein. She participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she competed in the 400m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle events.
Aged only 19 at that time, she was the youngest member of Liechtenstein’s Olympic team.
Hassler failed to reach the final in both events, finishing in 27th and 17th place overall respectively. However, her representation on the world map and effort was highly appreciated by her country.
8. Fritz Kaiser
Fritz Kaiser is a wealth management entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist from the Principality of Liechtenstein.
He is co-founder and executive chairman of Kaiser Partner, a wealth management firm that provides family office and wealth management services to private wealth owners and their advisors.
Kaiser is an advocate for responsible wealth management and is well known for his innovation in this field.
In 2011, he won the Spear’s Magazine “Wealth Management Innovator of the Year” award for the successful instigation and development of the ‘Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility’,’ a vehicle that promotes tax compliance by assisting UK taxpayers in the declaration of previously untaxed assets.
He also co-founded the Mentor Foundation, a leading international NGO voice for drug abuse prevention.
9. Alexander Frick
Dr. Alexander Frick was the Regierungschef of Liechtenstein from September 3rd, 1945 until July 16th, 1962, serving as a member of the Progressive Citizens’ Party.
From 1929 until 1936, he was a civil servant for the Liechtenstein fiscal administration, becoming director in 1936 and serving until 1945.
In 1931, he founded the Scouts of Liechtenstein and from 1935 until 1937, he served as chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Liechtenstein.
In 1961, he was awarded a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Fribourg. Following his service as head of the government, he became deputy of the Diet from 1966 until 1974.
He served as its speaker from 1966 until 1970. In 1957, Frick was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver with Sash for Services to the Republic of Austria. His noble qachievements over a period of so many years is always celebrated.
10. John Latenser, Sr.
John Latenser, Sr. was a Liechtenstein-born American architect whose influential public works in Omaha, Nebraska numbered in the dozens. His original name was Johann Laternser.
Many of the buildings Latenser designed, including public and private, are included on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the 1930s, 89 out of 98 blocks in Downtown Omaha contained at least one building designed by Latenser and Sons.
Latenser designed more than a dozen buildings that are currently included on the National Register of Historic Places.
