Moshe Dayan was born on May 20, 1915, in Palestine which is currently Israel. He was a soldier who led Israel to various victories over its Arabs neighbors and became a symbol of security to his people.
He began his journey in the military in the year 1937, where he obtained skills of fighting that were being deployed by British captain Order Wingate. The method was called guerilla warfare.
Dayan was a commander Of the Jerusalem area and as well he participated in armistice negotiations between Jordan and Israel. He was elected as a Member of Parliament of Mapai, a party of the Israel Labor Party Coalition. These and many other facts about him are explained below;
1. He was an Israel military leader politician
At the age of 14, Dayan enrolled in Jewish Defense Force Haganah. Later in the year 1938, Dayan joined British organized irregular police and led a small motorized patrol.
One of his heroes in his military was the British pro-Zionist intelligence officer Orde Wingate under whom he served in several special night squads operations. He became a crusader for peace. He played a crucial role in four wars and helped negotiate the Israel-Egypt peace treaty.
While in the military, Moshe learned guerilla warfare from British captain Charles Orde Wingate, who was a leader of night patrols organized to fight Arab rebel bands. He later left the military for his second career, politics in 1958.
2. Dayan was a member of parliament and minister
Moshe 1959, after leaving the military in 1958, entered another career in politics. Moshe joined Israel’s Labor Party, Mapai. He was later elected to Knesset (parliament). He later served as a minister of Agriculture.
In five years, Moshe deployed superior acts to the people of Israel as he served the ministerial role. He got into an argument with Levi Eshkol who was a new Prime Minister under the government of David Ben-Gurion.
He joined Ben-Gurion in forming a new party called the Alliance of Israel’s Workers. He did not out of the government for long but after a year only he was re-elected to the parliament representing Rafi later he rejoined the labor party.
3. He was appointed minister of defense
Dayan’s good reputation throughout the military up to selling citizens of Israel earned him a position in the government of Levi Eshkol. On June 1, 1967, Dayan was appointed Minister of Defense by Levi as Israel prepared for what would be the six-day war.
Dayan decided to launch a full-scale attack and seize against Syrians whom they were fighting against. The Syrians were up in Israeli villages in upper Galilee. Dayan was seen as a solo performer, partly admired, and a political giant after ending the war by an arrangement of the cease-fire with Syria through the Syria chief of staff.
4. Moshe was the Minister of Foreign Affairs
Dayan almost lost his job in 1973. This is when Egyptian President Anwar Sadat launched a surprise attack on Israel when the plan of construction of Yamit, a new Israel Port City was underway. The attack got Israel unprepared and they couldn’t revive themselves fast due to a surprise attack.
Due to this, Dayan who was the Minister was deemed to be the cause as they did not repulse quickly. A commission of supreme investigated performance and Dayan interrogation was reserved. However, in the regime of newly elected Prime Minister Meacham Begian,
Dayan was posted as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He accepted the post and initiated a negotiation with the Egyptians and restored peace when they signed a Peace Agreement on September 17, 1978.
5. He was the Commander of the Jerusalem Area
In 1948, Israel got independence. During Israel’s war of independence in 1949, Dayan was a commander of the Jerusalem area. He was a critical planner and vital person in this war. Later on, in 1949, he participated in armistice negotiations between Jordan and Israel. All his activities were published in the Diary of the Sinai campaign in 1966.
6. He was Sentenced to ‘Ten years’
In the participation of special night squads commanded by Orde Wingate, Dayan was arrested in 1939 in an illegal Haganah commanders’ course. Dayan was sentenced for the possession of illegal firearms. He was however released in 1941 and joined the auxiliary force of the Haganah that cooperated with the British army in the conquest of Lebanon from Vichy forces.
7. He adopted the Eye Patch
After being released from prison for illegal firearms, Dayan joined the British army in the conquest of Lebanon from Vichy forces.
In the course of his operations, he got on a high raised tower with a binocular to watch the other side of the Vichy forces. However, a sniper on the other side released a bullet from a gun that dismantled his binoculars, and pieces of glasses got into his eye. The injury made him wear an eye patch. The eye patch from then became his trademark.
8. Dayan had Set up a broadcasting network
Upon being injured and getting used to operating with one life, he continued to serve the military. He aided British intelligence to set up a broadcasting network. The main aim or purpose was to clandestine operations behind enemy lines if Palestine fell into German hands.
9. He was Chief of staff
In October 1949, he served as a commander of the southern command, and in June 1952 commander of the Northern command. He attended a senior officer’s course in Great Britain. He was appointed chief of operations at general headquarters in December 1952, following year was appointed as Israel’s fourth chief of staff. He concentrated on improving military capabilities.
10. Dayan’s Death was caused by a heart attack
Dayan was laid to rest in his village in Nahalal after colon cancer and a massive heart attack in 1981. Dayan bequeathed his personal belongings to his bodyguard
Dayan is an iconic hero of Israel who served aa s military and was a great peacemaker through peace treaties that he signed while serving Israel in various positions. He is still remembered in Israel on various occasions and a memoir of his life. Dayan can be considered the father of Israel.
