The Most Devastating Fires in Israel

Israel is a country in Western Asia. It is situated on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and the northern shore of the Red Sea. In its Basic Laws, Israel defines itself as a Jewish and democratic state, and as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

Due to global warming and recklessness of individual dark hot flames are known to cover the beautiful skies of Israel time from time. Below are the most devastating fires in Israel;

1. 1989 Mount Carmel Forest fire

Area that was burned in Mount Carmel forest fire, 1989 – Wikipedia

The Mount Carmel Forest Fire was a forest fire that occurred between 19 and 22 September 1989 on Mount Carmel in northern Israel. Fire broke out in a number of locations far apart from each other. The eruption of the fire in multiple locations led many to suspect that the fire was a result of arson, although such suspicions were never confirmed.

The weather conditions and mountainous topography of the area increased both the speed at which the fire spread and its intensity, making it difficult to extinguish. 142 firefighters of the Israel Fire and Rescue Services took part in the event using 64 fire trucks. They were assisted by 250 IDF soldiers, agricultural aircraft, volunteers of the Jewish National Fund and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, as well as police, Municipality of Haifa and MDA forces.

It was one of the largest forest fires in Israel, the largest being the Mount Carmel Forest fire of 2010. The fire extended over 6,000 dunams (600 ha; 1,500 acres), of which 3,200 dunams (320 ha; 790 acres) were natural forest areas of Aleppo pine which were part of the Carmel National Park and Nature Reserve, causing considerable damage to the flora and wildlife. Six firefighters and several volunteers were injured in the fire.

2. 1995 Jerusalem Forest fire

In early afternoon in July 1955 fire, fueled by hot desert winds and unseasonably high temperatures, burned a six-mile-long swath from Bet Shemesh to Shoresh, a cooperative farming community. Israel radio said arson was suspected. Arson had been used as a form of political protest in the region.

The main highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem was closed because of flames shooting into the air about five miles west of Jerusalem. Hundreds of firefighters from across Israel rushed to the scene to dump water from helicopters on the flames. Residents were evacuated from the cluster of towns in the forest. By nightfall, 25 of Shoresh’s 50 homes had been destroyed. At least 22 people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and two were reported in serious condition.

By midnight the fire was under control however, hundreds of small fires could still be seen from the hilltops, eerily lighting up the wooded slopes. Israelis took great pride in their forests, most of which have been planted since the state was founded in 1948 thus The Jewish National Fund, which was responsible for planting most of the trees vowed to rebuild.

3. The 2010 Mount Carmel fire

The 2010 Mount Carmel Forest Fire was a deadly forest fire that started on Mount Carmel in northern Israel, just south of Haifa. It was the deadliest civil disaster in Israeli history, until the 2021 Meron stampede that killed at least 45.

The fire began at about 11:00 local time on 2 December 2010, and spread quickly, consuming much of the Mediterranean forest covering the region. On 6 December, a 14-year-old resident of the Druze town told police that he had inadvertently started the fire with a nargila coal. However, residents claim the fire was an act of terrorism and called for an investigation. The fire was followed by a wave of arson throughout Israel and the West Bank.

The fire killed 36 Israel Prison Service members, most of them new recruits, as well as three senior police officers, among them the chief of Haifa’s police, and three firefighters, among them a 16-year-old volunteer. More than 17,000 people were evacuated, including several villages in the vicinity of the fire.

Because of the damage caused by the fire the casualty information center opened for the first time since the 2006 Lebanon War The fire was defeated on 5 December after raging for 77 hours, a little over three days.

In November 2016, a wave of fires (both wildfires and urban fires) spread across Israel from the south of the Beersheva region to the north, in Nahariya. While most of the fires were caused by weather conditions and negligence, some fires were caused by arsonists suspected of being nationally motivated Arabs.

A total of 1,773 fires broke out with the largest fire occurred in Haifa, where 527 apartments were destroyed among 77 buildings, leaving 75,000 residents of 11 neighborhoods were evacuated by firefighters and the search and rescue Kedem Battalion of the Home Front Command. The damage cost from the fire in Haifa was estimated at 500,000,000 Shekels.

Other major fires occurred in Zikhron Ya’akov and in the Jerusalem area, as well as smaller fires all across Israel and the West Bank. Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority reported that more than 20,000 dunams (4,900 acres) of forests, brushland and open space were burnt, the largest amount since the Mount Carmel Forest fire (2010).
