Kazuyo Sejima is a Japanese architect born on October 29, 1956, in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. She is the founder and director of Kazuyo Sejima & Associates. In 1995, Sejima co-founded an architectural firm SANAA with Ryue Nishizawa, who had worked for several years in Sejima’s firm.

Sejima attended Japan Women’s University and in 1979 she graduated. In 1981, she went on to complete her Master’s Degree course in architecture, and in the same year, she started working for Toyo Ito and Associates an architectural firm till 1987.

Throughout her architectural journey, she has designed many buildings. Some of her major works include Saishunkan Seiyaku Women’s Dormitory, Kumamoto, Japan (1990-1991), Competition for Chuya Nakahara Memorial Museum (1992), Competition for New Campus Center for Illinois Institute of Technology (1997-1998), SANAA’s 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (1999-2004), and DIOR Tokyo Omotesando Store, Tokyo, Japan (2003) among others.

1. She Co-Founded The Firm SANAA

Kazuyo co-founded the firm SANAA (Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates) with Nishizawa in Tokyo in the year 1995. Before the two became partners, Ryue Nishizawa was working for Kazuyo Sejima in his firm, Kazuyo Sejima & Associates.

After Ryue working for Sejima for several years, Sejima asked him to form a partnership and he agreed hence the establishment of the SANAA firm. Notable work of SANAA firm includes Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion in Toledo, Ohio, the Serpentine Pavilion in London, the Christian Dior Building in Omotesandō, Tokyo, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and the Rolex Learning Center at the EPFL in Lausanne among others.

2. Sejima was the Second Woman to Receive Pritzker Prize

It is remarkable to know that Sejima was the second woman to be awarded the Pritzker Prize, an international architecture award presented annually to honor a living architect or architect’s works that bring out a combination of talent, vision, and commitment.

Initially, architect Zaha Hadid was the first woman who was awarded the Pritzker Prize hence Semija was the second. The award was awarded jointly with Nishizawa his partner in work.

3. Kazuyo Worked For the Architectural Firm Toyo Ito and Associates

It is remarkable to know that architect Kazuyo worked for Toyo Ito and associates. After she went on to complete her Master’s Degree course in architecture in 1981, she started working for the firm the same year.

She worked for the firm from 1981 to 1987, then left and went on to establish her own firm, Kazuyo Sejima & Associates. Back in Toyo Ito and associates, she met with Ryue Nishizawa who was working for the firm as well. Later, they became partners and co-founded an architectural firm known as SANAA, in Tokyo.

4. She Founded Kazuyo Sejima & Associates

Kazuyo worked for the Toyo Ito firm from 1981 to 1987 and after leaving the firm she established her own firm known as Kazuyo Sejima & Associates back in the year 1987.

Ryue Nishizawa, (a Japanese architect based in Tokyo) was among the first employees of the firm. Ryue had as well worked with Sejima at Toyo Ito and Associates firm.

5. Sejima was the First Woman to be Appointed Director of the Architecture Sector for the Venice Biennale

Sejima was appointed director of the architecture sector for the Venice Biennale in 2010, which she curated for the 12th Annual International Architecture Exhibition.

It is interesting to note that she was the first ever woman to be appointed for this position in history. Which makes it remarkable and remember over the years.

Due to Kazuyo’s amazing designs she has been awarded several awards and given honors as an appreciation of her good works in the field of architecture like designing several notable designs.

Some of the awards Sejima received include the Special Prize for Residential Architecture, Tokyo Architecture Association in 1989, the Praemium Imperiale Award for Architecture in 2022, SD Prize, SD Review in 1990, the Prix 鶹APP World Judge in 2019, Kenneth F. Brown Asia Pacific Culture and Architecture Design Award, the University of Hawaii in 1995, Second Prize, Commercial Space Design Award in 1992, Rolf Schock Prize in Visual Arts in 2005, and Pritzker Prize in 2010 among others.

9. She is a Professor at Japan Women’s University

Despite Sejima being an architect, she is also a professor at the Japan Woman’s University, (the oldest and largest of private Japanese women’s universities) same university she attended and graduated in 1979.

She has as well served as a visiting professor, (teaching in universities on a short-term contract) at several universities in the world such as Harvard University and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne among others.

10. Sejima has Attained a Master’s in Architecture

Kazuyo is not a mare architect but a learned architect. She attained a master’s Degree course in architecture back in the year 1981.
