Top 10 Interesting Facts about Toshiro Mifune
Mifune was a Japanese actor. He featured in at least 150 films. He was well recognized for his 16-film collaboration with Akira Kurosawa between 1948 and 1965.
Toshiro acted in many films in his life, such as Rashomon, Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, and Yojimbo.
He was born in Seito, Japan on April 1, 1920. The place is currently known as Qingdao in China. He was the eldest son of Tokuzo and Sen Mifune.
Toshiro’s father, Tokuzo was a photographer and a trade merchant. He had a photography workshop in Qingdao and Yingkou, his father was the son of a known medical doctor from Kawauchi, Akita Prefecture.
Toshiro’s mother, Sen, was hatamoto’s daughter who was a high-ranking samurai official. His parents were once working for the Methodist missionaries and were among the Japanese citizens who were advised to live in Shandong.
He grew up with his two siblings and his parents in Dalian, Fengtian, when he was between 4 to 19 years old.

1. He Worked for His Farther when he was a Youth
At his youthful age, he worked at his father’s photo studio. after the experience, he got from his father and after spending his first 19 years in China, he was recruited to the Imperial Japanese Army Division.
While in the army he served in the Aerial Photography unit. This was during World War II which suited him well due to his last experience in his father’s workshop.
2. His Debut in Film was in Shin Baka Jidai
One of Mifune’s friends who worked at Toho Production for the Photography Department sent him to the New Faces audition. But the Photography Department was full, he promised to transfer him to another Photography Department if he wished.
later he was transferred and accepted along with 48 others out of 4000 applicants. He was allowed to take a screen test for Kajirō Yamamoto and was Instructed to mime anger. Due to his experience during wartime, Yamamoto became one of Mifune’s best films and he was recommended to director Senkichi Taniguchi. This film led to Mifune’s first feature role, in Shin Baka Jidai.
3. He Married a Woman from a Respected Tokyo Family
During a performance, one woman from the 32 women who were chosen during the contest of the new faces won his heart. Sachiko Yoshimine, who was Eight years younger than him came from one of the respected Tokyo families. Despite her family’s well-being, they fell in love and he proposed for marriage.
Director Senkichi Taniguchi together with the help of Akira Kurosawa helped Mifune by convincing the Yoshimine family to allow their marriage. The family accepted and the wedding was held on February 1950 at the Aoyama Gakuin Methodist Church. Their marriage was held in a church despite Yoshimine being a Buddhist.
The same year after their marriage, they had their first son, Shirō. In 1955, Takeshi their second son was born. Their daughter Mika was born to his mistress, who was an actress, Mika Kitagawa.
4. He was the most famous Japanese Actor
His bearing, acting range, and ability to act in foreign languages and his lengthy partnership with the director Akira Kurosawa, made him the most famous Japanese actor of his time. Mifune was also best known to Western audiences, this was because he often portrayed the samurai or rōnin. His director Kurosawa once said that “ the only weakness he could find with Mifune and his acting ability was his “rough” voice”.
5. His Efforts in Performance made Him be Known Most
He was recognized by many people because of his effort during his performances. The effort he deployed when he was preparing the Seven Samurai and Rashomon.
For the film the Ánimas Trujani, he dedicated his time to studying footage of lions in the wild. Mifune also studied Mexican tapes of different actors speaking, to fluently recite all the lines in Spanish.
This made many Mexicans believe that Toshiro Mifune could have easily passed for the native of Oaxaca due to his best performance. When People asked him why he chose Mexico to act in his next film, Mifune said, “Simply because, first of all, Mr Ismael Rodríguez convinced me; secondly, because I was eager to work in beautiful Mexico, of a great tradition; and thirdly, because the story and character of ‘Animas Trujano’ seemed very human to me”.
His Ánimas Trujano was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. When Mifune met the Mexican President in Oaxaca he gave him a Japanese pistol as a gift.
6. He was Good at Memorizing
During his career Mifune was professional, he memorized his lines and he did not carry any scripts on set. He was known for his humble character as an international star, and for treating people and his crew very generously. Mifune occasionally threw lavish well-catered parties for them and also paid for their families to go to onsen resorts.
7. He was Honoured at the Hollywood Walk of Fame
On 2016 November 14, due to his work in the motion pictures industry which was Located at 6912 Hollywood Boulevard, he was recognized as a star on the Hollywood Walk.
8. His Work is Still Recognized to date.
On August 19, 2022, he was remembered by the Turner Classic Movies channel “Summer Under The Stars” series, where some of his films were broadcasted.
9. The Japanese Government Honored him for his Work
During his career, he won various awards such as the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, and won the prize twice, in 1961 and 1965.
He was also awarded the Medal of Honor by Purple Ribbon in 1986 and also the Order of the Sacred Treasure which was presented to him by the Japanese government in 1993.
10. He Died Due to Organ Failure
In 1992, he began suffering from known health issues. The doctors suggested that it was due to overwork. He died On December 24, 1997, in Mitaka, Tokyo, due to multiple organ failures.
