Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Jamaican music culture has a strong global presence. The musical genres reggae, ska, mento, rocksteady, dub, and, more recently, dancehall and ragga all originated in the island’s vibrant, popular recording industry.
Jamaican music’s influence on music styles in other countries includes the practice of toasting, which was brought to New York City and evolved into rapping. British genres such as Lovers rock, jungle music and grime are also influenced by Jamaican music.
These have themselves gone on to influence numerous other genres, such as punk rock, dub poetry, New Wave, two-tone, lovers rock, reggaetón, jungle, drum and bass, dubstep, grime, and American rap music.
Starting off with Bob Marley being the most famous Jamaican Musician, let’s look at more.
1. Bob Marley
Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer, musician, and songwriter. Considered one of the pioneers of reggae, his musical career was marked by fusing elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, as well as his distinctive vocal and songwriting style.
Marley’s contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide and made him a global figure in popular culture to this day. Over the course of his career, Marley became known as a Rastafari icon, and he infused his music with a sense of spirituality.
He is also considered a global symbol of Jamaican music and culture and identity and was controversial for his outspoken support for democratic social reforms.
2. Alaine
Alaine Laughton, known by her first name, is a Jamaican American reggae singer and songwriter. She was born in New Jersey. In early 2019, Alaine got baptized and released her new single in the summer holiday titled, Boast inna God.
Through the late 1990s and early 2000s, Alaine lived in the United States and did songwriting and singing backup for Rocafella artists such as Cam’ron and Freeway. She moved back to Jamaica in the summer of 2004 to focus on her own music. Her upbeat personality and beautiful energy have cemented her in the hearts of Jamaicans and many fans worldwide.
3. Vybz Kartel
Vybz Kartel, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall recording artist, composer, record producer, entrepreneur, and convicted murderer. Among his various nicknames, he is referred to as World Boss.
In 2014, Kartel was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his associate Clive Lizard Williams. He will be eligible for parole once he has served a minimum of 35 years in prison. Despite being imprisoned, Kartel continues to release new music prolifically, releasing over 50 new songs in 2016 alone.
Kartel has collaborated with a number of hip hop and R&B artists such as Major Lazer, Rihanna, Jay Z, Digga D, and Unknown T, he has also been credited as an inspiration for the dancehall-infused work of a number of Western artists, including Drake, who has cited Kartel as being one of his biggest inspirations.
4. Koffee
Koffee is a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, rapper, deejay, and guitarist from Spanish Town, Jamaica. She released her debut single Burning in 2017, and in 2019 signed with Columbia Records.
Her 2019 EP Rapture won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, making Koffee the youngest person and only woman to be awarded in the Best Reggae Album category. Her most recent album Gifted was released in March 2022.
5. Shabba Ranks
Shabba Ranks is a Jamaican dancehall musician. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was one of the most popular Jamaican musicians in the world.
Throughout his prominence in his home country as a dancehall artist, he gained popularity in North America with his studio album, Just Reality, in 1990. He released two studio albums, As Raw as Ever and X-tra Naked, which both won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
Shabba is notoriously popular for “Mr. Loverman” and “Ting-A-Ling”, which were globally acclaimed and deemed his signature songs.
6. Morgan Heritage
Morgan Heritage is a Grammy-winning Jamaican reggae band formed in 1994 by five children of reggae artist Denroy Morgan, namely Peter Peetah Morgan, Una Morgan, Roy Gramps Morgan, Nakhamyah Lukes Morgan, and Memmalatel Mr. Mojo Morgan. They have toured internationally and released a number of reggae albums.
Morgan Heritage have worked with many reggae bands and DJs, including Capleton, Junior Kelly, Luciano, Gentleman, and Beres Hammond. The group’s 2015 album Strictly Roots won the Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Album category in 2016. The band later released the album Avrakedabra, which was nominated for another Grammy in 2018, and in 2019 received a second Grammy.
7. Sean Paul
Sean Paul is a Jamaican rapper and singer who is regarded as one of dancehall’s most prolific artists.
Paul’s singles Get Busy and Temperature topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and most of his albums have been nominated for the Grammy’s Best Reggae Album, with Dutty Rock winning the award.
Paul has also been featured in many other singles including chart-toppers Baby Boy with Beyoncé, What About Us by The Saturdays, Rockabye by Clean Bandit, and Cheap Thrills by Sia.
8. Buju Banton

Buju Banton is a Jamaican reggae dancehall musician. He is considered to be one of the most significant and well-regarded artists in Jamaican music. Banton has collaborated with many international artists, including those in the hip-hop, Latin, and punk rock genres, as well as the sons of Bob Marley.
Banton released a number of dancehall singles as early as 1987 but came to prominence in 1992 with two albums, Stamina Daddy and Mr. Mention, the latter becoming the best-selling album in Jamaican history upon its release. That year he also broke the record for No. 1 singles in Jamaica, previously held by Bob Marley and the Wailers.
9. Shenseea
Shenseea is a Jamaican dancehall artist. She initially gained attention after appearing on songs by Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, and Christina Aguilera. In 2019, she signed a recording contract with Interscope Records; and released the song Blessed featuring Tyga, which has accumulated over 58 million views on YouTube.
In 2021, she was featured on Kanye West’s Donda album on the songs Pure Souls alongside Roddy Ricch, and Ok Ok Pt 2 with Rooga. For her collaborations on West’s album, Shenseea received an Album of the Year nomination as a featured artist, at the 64th Grammy Awards. She also won Best Reggae Act at the 2021 MOBO Awards. In 2022, she released the single Lick featuring Megan Thee Stallion, from her debut album Alpha.
10. Busy Signal
Busy Signal is a Jamaican dancehall reggae artist. His actual name is Reanno Devon Gordon and was nicknamed by his friends because he is constantly busy.
His hit tracks for 2007/2008 were Nah Go A Jail Again, Smoke Some High Grade, Tic Toc, and the track entitled Unknown Number has made tremendous airplay and dancehall reviews, especially in the Caribbean and the US. He has released a hit dancehall album entitled Step Out.
Busy Signal appears on the No Doubt album, Push and Shove, collaborating with the band and the production team Major Lazer on the title track. He also appears on Major Lazer’s second album Free the Universe, in the track Watch Out For This (Bumaye), which was a hit single in several European countries.
