Trieste is a city and a seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated in the Northern part of the high Adriatic in Northeastern Italy nearing the border of Slovenia. The city covers a total area of 84 square kilometers (33 square miles) and has an average altitude of 2 meters (7 feet) above sea level.

As of the results recorded in September 2020, Trieste’s population is about 210000 people. The best period to visit Trieste is the spring and autumn seasons. However, in any period some rainy days are possible.

Originally, Trieste had a particular dialect called tergestino which was gradually replaced at the beginning of the 19th century by the Triestine dialect of Venetian and other languages such as Italian, Slovene, and German. Trieste which borders Italy on the right with Slovenia has changed hands several times in its 2, 000-year history.

Triestine and Italian were the most spoken by the largest population, German was the language of the Austrian bureaucracy, and Slovene was mainly spoken in the surrounding villages. They also speak English.

2. Beaches You are Likely to Find at Trieste

Many parts of Trieste lie directly on the sea and are used as a port area. When at Trieste you have a chance to swim in the sea in the city center, many locals also have fun moments swimming at Barcola which is an urban beach.

You can do a friend meeting up at Barcola and enjoy everything around you. There are cafes, restaurants, and ice cream shops around. In the evening, people enjoy the walks as there are bars with a view of the sea. The best time to go to the beach is in July and August. In June, the sea is still a little cool.

Trieste is a quite rainy city: 1,000mm (40 In) of rainfall in a typical year, and there is a very high likelihood of thunderstorms occurring in the late spring and summer. Precipitation ranges from 55mm in the driest month which is always February to 110mm (4.3 in) in the wettest month; October.

The winter season is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods from December to February or early March which is always quite mild. In most instances, in cold months the temperatures can drop to as low as -7 degrees Celsius and can remain frozen even during the day. However, when the temperatures are unable to reach the value of the Po Valley, the wind increases the sensation of the cold. Snow is rare in Trieste because the wind referred to as Bora is dry.

However, there is another version of wind called dark Bora that is likely to bring light snowfalls. In the summer season, it is always hot and humid but always tempered by the breezes. The best times to visit Trieste are the spring and autumn seasons, particularly from mid-April to mid-June and the month of September.

4. Economics of Trieste

In the beginning, the era of Austro-Hungarian, Trieste was the leading European city in Economy, trade, and commerce. After World War 1 and 11 the economy declined as Trieste was a peripheral city during the cold war and hence experienced an economic revival.

Later, the economy of Trieste was now based on ports namely the free port of Trieste and the port of Koper. Port of Trieste is a trade hub with a commercial shipping business, oil terminals, and busy container and steel work. The port of Trieste is part of the Silk Road as it can be used by container ships with large drafts. The port is also Italy’s and the Mediterranean’s greatest coffee port supplying 40% of Italy’s coffee.

The coffee industry began during the era of Austro- Hungarian with the government awarding tax-free status to the city encouraging more commerce. A large part of Italian coffee imports is processed in Trieste. The real estate market in Trieste has begun growing recently.

Trieste can be easily reached by car, driving along the motorway A4. Alternatively when visiting Trieste city one can use the train. There are several daily connections with the high speed of Trenitalia Company between the main Italian cities as well as a capillary network of regional and interregional transport.

There are many bus stops close to the main station and one can also use buses. Taxis are also readily available and they have fixed rates set for a specific destination. The Trieste city also has an airport (Ronchi dei Legionari) and it’s about 35km from Trieste and can be reached using bus or taxi. You can also use a ferry or a tram as a mode of transport.

Artists represented at the museum include locals such as Alic Psacaropulo and Arturo Rietti also have national artists such as Lucio Fontana, Giovanni Fattori, and Giorgio De Chirico.

The Museo Del Mare thoroughly traces the ancient seafaring background and provides an overview of the port’s history. Some of the exhibits you are likely to see are the painstakingly detailed model ships and cross sections of various vessels, equipment, and artefacts salvaged from historical ships. Also, Trieste is the home of music and cinema.

Trieste has a wide range of festivals and events such as the Trieste Film Festival which is celebrated in mid-January and set aside to celebrate the best international short films and the works of early Italian filmmakers. It is said that in the Gulf of Trieste, fishing is challenging as a result of crystal-clear, nutrient-poor water with little plankton. Some of the fish are sold directly from the boats while others are delivered to restaurants and town shops. Fishing is discouraged in the month of August and also in winter.
