Bugsy Siegel. Who was this Italian Gangstar

Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was a notorious American gangster who played a seminal role in the development of the Las Vegas Strip. He possessed not only influence within the Jewish Mafia but also held significant sway within the National Crime Syndicate and the Italian-American Mafia. Siegel was known for his dapper appearance and charismatic personality and was one of the earliest gangsters to receive widespread media coverage.

During his formative years, Siegel cultivated a close affiliation with Meyer Lansky, a peer who employed his exceptional intellect towards the establishment of a compact criminal organization that gradually diversified its operations to encompass gambling and automotive theft.

Recognizing the need for the Jewish populace of Brooklyn to adopt a similar modus operandi as the Irish and Italian communities, Lansky, who had already had a contentious encounter with notorious mobster Charles “Lucky” Luciano, inducted Siegel as the first member of his nascent gang.

Siegel became embroiled in the illicit trade of bootlegging across several major urban areas of the East Coast and concurrently served as a contract killer, whom Lansky engaged on behalf of other criminal organizations. The duo founded the Bugs and Meyer Mob, which executed hits for various bootleg gangs operating in New York and New Jersey, predating the formation of Murder, Inc. by nearly a decade.

The gang maintained its activities by hijacking the liquor consignments of its competitors and was held responsible for the violent elimination of multiple rival gangland figures. Comprising of prominent members such as Abner “Longie” Zwillman, Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, and Jake Lansky, Joseph “Doc” Stacher, another accomplice of the Bugs and Meyer Mob, recounted testament to Siegel’s bravery and credited him for safeguarding the lives of his companions as the mob transitioned into bootlegging.

Siegel’s criminal endeavours began during Prohibition when he became a bootlegger and one of the founding members of Murder, Inc. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Siegel turned his attention to gambling and eventually made his way to California where he worked as a hitman and enforcer for the Mafia. In 1941, Siegel was put on trial for the murder of his associate Harry Greenberg but was acquitted in 1942.

Siegel travelled to Las Vegas and was instrumental in financing and managing some of the city’s earliest casinos, including the Flamingo Hotel. After developer William R. Wilkerson ran out of funds, Siegel stepped in and oversaw the final stages of construction. However, the Flamingo’s grand opening was marred by poor weather and technical difficulties, and Siegel’s mob partners suspected that he had misappropriated funds from the construction budget.

In June 1947, Siegel was assassinated in Beverly Hills, California, shot through the window of his girlfriend’s mansion by a sniper. His death marked the end of an era in American organized crime and cemented Siegel’s reputation as a legendary figure in Mafia lore.
