Marjane Satrapi is a French Iranian graphic novelist and Cartoonist. She was born on 22nd November 1969. Despite her challenging childhood She has a great sense of humour and expresses it in some of her work. She is a strong woman and extremely talented too. 1 Woman Cartoonist

Satrapi is a woman cartoonist whose work in the comic has been appreciated worldwide. Her fame came about because of her critically acclaimed autobiographical graphic novel “Persepolis”.

Comic Alliance which was an American website dedicated to covering the comic book industry listed her as one of the 12 women cartoonists deserving of a lifetime achievement recognition. Satrapi prefers the term “comic books to Graphic novels “Her work was used in schools though, in 2013, Chicago schools were ordered by the district to remove “Persepolis from classrooms because of graphic language and violence.

2 Her uncle was her paternal hero

Marjane Satrapi growing up was exposed to various brutalities. Due to different persecution, many of her friends and families were arrested and even murdered. Strapi found a hero in her uncle Anoosh who was arrested and was in exile in the Soviet Union.

Anoosh returned to Iran and was arrested again and sentenced to death. On the night before his execution, he was only allowed one visitor and he requested Satrapi. Their relationship was genuine. She really did adore her late uncle.

3 She can speak different languages

She can speak multiple languages and this is because she moved while she was a kid and got to interact with different people outside her home town Iran. She can communicate in English, French, German, Swedish and her native language Persian.

Satrapi after the difficulties she faced while she was a child, has expressed her belief in peace and prosperity. Satrapi thinks that countries should invest more in scholarships so that children could study in different countries around the world. She says that this enhances their interactivity and understanding of each other.

4 Found herself on the wrong side of the law

Satrapi, when she was barely a teenager, found herself in trouble with the police. This was because of disregarding modesty codes and buying music banned by the regime. Even though her parents were confident about their teachings to her on fighting for her rights, they were still concerned about her safety and decided to send her abroad to further her studies.

They arranged for her to live with a family friend to study abroad and in 1983, she arrived in Vienna Austria. She attended the Lycee Francais de Vienne which is a French Curriculum a secondary school

5 Was Homeless

I know it’s hard to believe, but this successful novelist was at one point homeless. During her time in Vienna, as stated in her autobiographical graphic novel, Strapi moved from one residence to another as situations changed and were eventually homeless. She contracted a serious case of pneumonia and was hospitalized, during this period she almost died from the combination of exposure and pneumonia. After her recovery, she went back to Iran.

6 Satrapi was the only child of her parents

Satrapi was born Rhast Iran. And was the only child of her parents she grew up in a middle-class family and both her parents were politically active. When a series of events led to the overthrow of the Shah and a replacement of the government by the Islamic republic they were forced to undergo Islamic revivalism. This was a reform movement of Muslims who aim to return to the founding scriptures of Muslims.

Her parents strived to teach her how to stand up for herself and fight for her rights dependently. They wanted her to be a strong-willed woman.

7 David Beuchhard was her mentor

Satrapi started her career after meeting with David Beuchard who was a French comic artist. He served as both her teacher and her mentor. Satrapi gained fame from her autobiographical graphic novel “Persepolis” which was published from 2000 to 2003. The novel came in 4 parts. It is mainly about her life story in Iran and Europe.

The first two books were translated into English as Persepolis and Persepolis 2. This took place in the year 2003 to 2005. The book won her awards. Her other works included “Chicken with Plums”, and “Embroideries”, Her English works included monsters are afraid of the moon and the sigh.

8 She is talented

Not only is she a comic writer but also a successful director. In 2012 she acted and also directed a comedy crime film known as “Gang of the Jotas”. This was from her own screenplay In 2014 she directed “The Voice “film, this is a comedy horror film from a screenplay by Michael R.Perry and in 2019 she directed a biopic of two-time Nobel prize winner Marie Curie, named Radioactive.

Strapi is extremely talented and can wear different types of shoes depending on what is required from her. Apart from acting, producing and comic writing, she is also a political activist and an illustrator.

9 Married twice

This famous graphic novelist was married at the age of 21 by Reza, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war. She divorced him. She then moved to Strasbourg France. Her parents encouraged her to stay permanently in Europe. She is now married to Mattias Ripa, a Swedish national. They live in 鶹APP.

10 Won a ton of awards

In 2001 she won the Angouleme Coup De Coeur Award, A major prize for comic authors for her work in Persepolis. In 2002” Persepolis” won the Angouleme prize for Scenario, The award was given during the annual Angouleme France awards. In 2005 Angouleme Best Comic book award for Poulet aux prones.

She also won the 2007 Best Animation in the award Los Angeles Film Critics Association, in 2008 she received the Get Perich award which is awarded to cartoonists or humourists in memory of Jsume Perich and in 2013 Noor Iranian Film Festival awarded her for the best Animation director for chicken with plums
