1. In the men’s doubles, Setiawan was rated first with two different partners
With two different partners, Setiawan was ranked top in the men’s doubles. He attained world no. 1 status with Markis Kido in September 2007 and Mohammad Ahsan in November 2013, respectively.
His six gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games include three in the men’s doubles and three in the team competition. He won the men’s doubles crowns alongside Kido at the 2005 and 2009 Asian Championships, the 2006 World Cup, the 2007 World Championships, the 2008 Olympic Games, and the 2010 Asian Games.
2. His father made him interested in Badminton
Hendra Setiawan was born to Ferry Yugianto and Kartika Christyaningrum in Pemalang, Central Java. Of his three siblings, he is the youngest. When Setiawan watched his father playing badminton, he developed an interest in the game.
At the age of seven, he began practising at the Sinar Mutiara Tegal club. Setiawan made the decision to relocate to Jakarta after finishing middle school in order to practise with the Jaya Raya club and finish his schooling at the Ragunan sports academy.
3. Setiawan made his first appearance in the Thomas Cup in 2006
At that contest, he and the Indonesian men’s team came in second place. After defeating South Koreans Jung Jae-sung and Lee Yong-dae, ranked 14th in the world, the Setiawan and Kido partnership advances to the 2006 Indonesia Open final.
Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya, the winners of the 2000 Olympics, defeated them, making them unable to defend their championship. Then, at the Hong Kong Open, they claimed their first victory of the year.
4. He’s a father to twins
In a ceremony held at the JW Marriott Jakarta on October 9, 2011, Setiawan wed Sandiani Arief. On February 19, 2014, his wife gave birth to twins named Richard Heinrich and Richelle Hillary Setiawan. On July 26, 2017, Russell Howard Setiawan, a new baby boy, was born to Hendra and his wife.
Aside from his professional YouTube channel, Setiawan also maintains a channel where he posts family and World Tour vlogs with his wife and children as well as vlogs with other Indonesian players. As of July 2022, there were 206,000 subscribers to his channel.
5. He’s the oldest player to have won a World Championships
In the final, they defeated the promising Japanese team of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi 25-23, 9-21, and 21-15. At 35 years and 0 days old, Setiawan won the World Championships title, making him the oldest player to do so.
The final was played on his birthday. Setiawan and Ahsan won the BWF World Tour Finals at the conclusion of the year by defeating Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe of Japan in two sets, 24-22 and 21-19.
After the long reign of their younger countrymen Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, their rating as the second-best athlete in the world rose as a result of these accomplishments at the conclusion of the year.
6. He wanted to become a doctor
He never envisioned himself as a professional athlete but like all young people he wanted to become a doctor. However, he actively played badminton since he was a child and when he started to become the school champion he realized he loved the sport.
