Over the last decade, a lot of development has taken place in the Seminyak area. The area that previously separated Legian from Seminyak is now more developed.

This has reduced the green space between the two areas. The villages of Kerobokan Umalas and Petitenget are now much closer to Seminyak. Sadly, this means that there is now a lot of congestion in the area.

Located in south Bali, Seminyak is on the main west coast. This area is congested with traffic. Two routes can grant you access to Seminyak.

You can use the western route or the eastern route. Known as Jalan sunset, the eastern bypass is a faster route though longer in distance.

8. Bali enforces the death penalty for those found with illegal drugs

Seminyak is the heart of Bali’s drug scene. There are endless offers of cocaine, ecstasy, and other illegal drugs. Please do not indulge while there as Indonesia is said to have one of the world’s strictest drug laws.

In Bali, if you are found in possession, trafficking, importing, or exporting illegal drugs, you will face the death penalty. These illegal drugs include heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana.

The possession of illegal drugs even in small quantities will earn you a trial and a jail sentence. Since 2014, there have been several arrests of foreigners found in possession of illegal drugs. Recently, there were some executions of those found guilty of drug charges.

You may come across street boys trying to sell drugs. Usually, these boys are said to be working with the undercover police. If arrested, the police may try and get a bribe in exchange for your release if you are fortunate. If not you are likely to end up in custody with a drug-related charge.

As you walk along the beach, look out for red flags planted in the sand. This means you should not swim. The flags are warnings of dangerous rip currents.

A rip current can pull you out to sea at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, even the strongest swimmers can’t swim against a rip current and some die by drowning.

When you encounter a rip current, stay calm and swim sideways. You will be swimming along the shore till you get out of the current. Once you are out of the current, you can then swim to shore.
