Taman Mini Indonesia Indah also known as TMII is an Indonesian cultural-themed tourist park in East Jakarta. It occupies an area of ​​approximately 150 hectares.

The idea of constructing the “Indonesia Indah” Mini Park (TMII) came with Siti Hartinah Suharto, fondly known as Mrs. Tien Suharto. The idea emerged through the contents of President Soeharto’s speech in 1971. It was officially launched in 1975.

The park has some regional Pavilions which consist of 26 exclusive replicas of traditional houses of chieftains found throughout the Indonesian archipelago from Java, Papua, Sulawesi, Aceh, and Kalimantan.

These pavilions display the history, arts and crafts, and traditions of each of the provinces. Built for education and family fun, Taman Mini has large areas for family recreation, several florae and fauna parks, various museums, performing theatres, an Imax theatre, and accommodation facilities.

1. TMII is a tourist attraction

Tourists come to TMII to view the exceptional breadth and full range of regional architecture in the Indonesian archipelago, where the pavilion presents at least three typical examples of each regional style.

The “Teater Tanah Airku” is the first theatre in Indonesia equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It is a blend of typical Indonesian and international aesthetics. 

There are also museums dedicated to rare animals. An example of this is the Komodo museum which attracts both local and overseas tourists. There’s also a museum displaying gifts received by President Soeharto during his thirty years of leadership. 

For those who love nature, there are orchid gardens, cacti, herbs, and flower gardens, and there is also a Birds Park.

2. Visit the Iconic Golden Snail Imax

Located in the Taman Mini, The Imax Theater presents “beautiful Indonesia” on a huge screen using the latest Imax System. Famously known as Keong Emas meaning Golden Snail, This theater is easily recognized because the roof takes the shape of a golden snail. 

The Theater was opened in 1984 and was the first Imax Theater in Indonesia and one of the main attractions in TMII. It was built entirely by Indonesians’ best talents.

Visitors can watch Educational movies about Indonesian culture and natural beauty and other topics like natural disasters. All this is watched on 70mm cinematography technology. The movies are projected on a huge screen making it feel like you’re a part of the movie.

3. Learn more about Confucian Faith at TMII

Inside the TMII Park, there are religious buildings of several official faiths. This is meant to showcase the inter-faith tolerance and religious harmony of Indonesia.

One of the Religious buildings is the Confucian Temple. The Temple was built after the recognition of Indonesian Chinese culture as an integral part of Indonesian culture in 2000, and the new Indonesian Chinese pavilion and a Confucian temple were built within the park.

Confucianism is a system of thought and behavior that originated in ancient China. It is also described as tradition, a philosophy, a religion, a humanistic or rationalistic religion, a way of governing, or simply a way of life.

Confucianism developed from what was later called the Hundred Schools of Thought from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius.

Apart from Restaurants and religious buildings, TMII has several Parks. The Taman Burung Bird park is a must-visit when at TMII.The park has different species of Birds from various parts of the world.

Taman Burung is divided into five exhibits namely Kubah Barat, ketubah Timur, free-ranging river exhibits, raptor aviaries, and other aviaries.

There are other exhibits scattered around the park. Some of the birds that Visitors come to see are from Indonesia and some from outside such as China, Africa, Australia, and South America.

Some of the birds that the park has are the Chinese goose, Wrinkled Hornbill, Javan Hawk Eagle, and Zebra Doves.

5. The idea of TMII came with the Indonesian First Lady

Taman Mini is the brainchild of the late Ibu Tien Soeharto, former Indonesian First Lady. The Construction of the Park began in 1971 and it was officially inaugurated on April 20, 1975. 

The Park’s main mission is to preserve and develop various Indonesian cultures and act as a medium for strengthening the nation’s unity, and integrity and instilling values in the younger generation. 

On December 31, 2014, the World Peace Committee named TMII as an International Civilization and World Peace Theme Park. Taman Mini is an ideal theme park for families to become more acquainted with other regional cultures.

6. Visit the Incredible Dunia air Tawar at the TMII

Dunia Air Tawar is a recreational facility that presents a display of its collection themed ‘Indonesia and the Freshwater World’. The park contains freshwater biodiversity and presents simulations of ecosystems from native wetlands. It was built in 1992 and inaugurated on April 20, 1994. 

 It is located on the south side of the TMII. The building consists of two floors with an area of ​​5,500 square meters on the edge of an artificial lake that merges and forms a circle of fresh water.

The freshwater world at TMII is the largest and second most complete freshwater park in the world and the largest in Asia. It has 6,000 animals of 126 species from various parts of  Indonesia and other parts of the world.

7. Taman Mini is Government’s Owned

On April 7th, 2021, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) cultural park in East Jakarta was taken over by the government. The move took over the park from Harapan Kita Foundation, a foundation set up by the family of former president Soeharto.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed a presidential regulation on March 31 2021 officially mandating the takeover. The regulation also stipulates a requirement for the government to establish a team that would oversee the management and transition for three months.

The government assured its citizens that it will remain committed toTMII in preserving the national heritage and serving as an education facility. It also needed to optimize it to be a cultural theme park under international standards.

8. Children will enjoy the Istana Anak Anak Indonesia Castle

The Indonesian Children’s Palace abbreviated as IAAI was inaugurated on April 20th,1986 by president Soeharto. It is a castle-shaped building similar to a Cinderella fairy tale. This palace can be a place for children to learn and play. 

The main building of the palace is named Graha Widya Tama, it consists of four floors with an open space on the second floor. This building has two wings and a tower rising high into the sky symbolizing the togetherness of boys and girls in achieving high performance. 

The development of IAAI is based on the idea that it is important to educate children to face the future and the fact that children also need to play. this is the major reason why IAAI is equipped with learning facilities like Science and Technology props, diatonic and pentatonic musical instruments, and health and educational playgrounds.

9. TMII Captures the Cultures of 26 Indonesian Provinces

Each Indonesian province maintains its own unique and distinct culture, TMII has built a model of each of the houses from Indonesian provinces with the collections of “Rumah adat” as an example of Indonesian vernacular architecture, clothing, dances, and traditions.

Rumah adat is a traditional house built in any of the vernacular architecture styles of Indonesia, collectively belonging to Austronesian architecture. The traditional houses and settlements of the several hundreds of ethnic groups of Indonesia are extremely varied and all have their specific history.

TMII reconstructed the homes of the various provinces and created a realistic model of the environment and shelters of the various people of Indonesia. The venues are similarly situated around the main lake to the different islands of the Indonesian archipelago.

The pavilions are divided into six areas on the main islands of Indonesia.The six Pavillions are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua. 

10. TMII Rides Facilitate Park Tours

Taman Mini is built in a very large area of about 150 hectares. This makes it very difficult for local and international tourists to access its various amenities.

Due to this fact, Taman Mini has several rides that help visitors move from one point to another.

Some of the rides at TMII are Skylift Indonesia cable cars also known as Aerial lift systems. They are relatively easy to move, and the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of aerial lifts have seen an increase in gondola lifts being integrated into urban public transport systems.

Other means of transport at TMII are Aeromovel Indonesia which is a wind-powered people mover, Boat ride on the Indonesian archipelago lake, Bicycle rents, and Car rides.
