Top 10 Fascinating Facts about Lovina Beach
Lovina Beach is a resort area on the north coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s known for its black sand beaches, coral reefs, and dolphins. From the village of Temoekoes, a trail leads to Singsing Waterfall and a Dutch war monument.
The Banjar Hot Springs have warm water pools and tropical gardens. The Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist monastery is home to a miniature replica of the huge Japanese archaeological site Borobudur.
Lovina Beach is located some 9 kilometers from Singaraja, the capital city of the Buleleng Regency, facing the Bali Sea.
Unlike other white-sand beaches on Bali, Lovina beach is of grey and black volcanic sand. It also features incredible underwater life. Its main attraction is the bottle-nosed dolphins Known as Tursiops truncates who have made this coast their playground.

1. It has Grey and Black Sand

It is believed that Indonesia has the most active Volcanoes in the world. Bali is home to three active Volcanoes. Unlike other white-sand beaches on Bali, Lovina beach is of grey and black volcanic sand.
The sand on the beaches in Bali is black because Bali is a volcanic island with multiple volcanoes and a long history of devastating eruptions.
When a volcano erupts, it produces Lava and when this Lava cools, it hardens and becomes a rock, the rock is called Basalt. In this case, where lava has flowed from Bali’s volcanoes onto the beaches, the basalt has broken into coarse particles and taken over the shorelines.
2. Lovina Beach has Bottle-nosed Dolphins

Lovina Beach’s main attraction is the bottle-nosed dolphins Known as Tursiops truncates who have made this coast their playground. Dolphins normally appear early in the morning just when the first rays of the sunrise are on the horizon.
These incredibly smart creatures will come and swim near boats and cavort around creating a truly fascinating show of nature. This amazing attraction can be viewed from traditional boats called “Jukung” which are offered by individuals on shore.
Bottlenose dolphins are aquatic mammals in the genus Tursiops. They are common, cosmopolitan members of the family Delphinidae, the family of oceanic dolphins. Molecular studies show the genus definitively contains two species, the common bottlenose dolphin also known as Tursiops Truncatus, and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin or Tursiops Eduncus.
3. “Lovina” means mother love
The name Lovina is said to be derived from the word “Love” and “Ina” which is Balinese for “mother”. Therefore, Lovina means Love for the Motherland.
The name Lovina was once banned from being used here since it was considered alien. Tourist businesses in the area used other names such as Manggala, Krisna, Angsoka, or Nirwana.
However, when tourism to north Bali grew significantly, the name Lovina was used again since it was easier for tourists to remember and was therefore favored by tour operators.
4. It is consist of several Beaches
Lovina Beach is a combination of smaller Beaches traversing several local villages between two districts in the North Bali regency of Buleleng. It spans two kilometers from East to west.
The Beach stretches from west of the city and is said to be a quiet yet popular tourist spot on the Island’s southside. A large parking area borders the beach with rows of Cafes and trendy Seafood restaurants nearby.
Some of the small beaches and nice villages that are contained in Lovina Beach are Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Anturan, Banyualit, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus.
5. Kalibukbuk Buddhist Temple is Located on the Beach

The discovery of Buddhist Sites in Kalibukbuk was first reported by the owner of Angsoka Hotels in Lovina in 1991. Kalibukbuk Buddhist temple consists of three main buildings, one of the main temples and two ancillary temples in the northeastern.
The gardens are laid out beautifully so nice to wander through. There are a lot of steps up to the site. There is a very cool and serene meditation room with a high ceiling and an altar. This is where the monks come to meditate.
Kalibukbuk Buddhist temple is now one of the tourist attractions in Lovina and it’s considered a priceless cultural asset. It is supported directly by the people of Kalibukbuk and Local the Government.
6. Visit the Banjar Hotsprings
Banjar Hotsprings is located in Lovina Northern Bali in the Singaraja area near Banjar village. The locals refer to it as Airpanas Banjar. It is a beautiful hot spring set in a lush jungle garden.
It is set in a beautiful tropical garden and consists of three pools. The two main pools are decorated with stone-carved Naga Sculptures spewing water into the pools. The third pool is small with three spouts giving a natural massage.
The pools are built around the Banjar hot spring. The water has a nice temperature of 30 degrees and a sulfur content of 26 percent. The water has a slightly eggy smell which the locals believe is good for healing different s types of diseases.
7. Discover the Dutch war Monument
Apart from enjoying the Dolphins and a good swim at Lovina Beach, Visitors can also see the Dutch war monument. The monument is a vivid reminder of the Dutch intervention in Bali in 1906.
The Dutch intervention in Bali was a military intervention as part of the Dutch colonial suppression, killing over 1000 people most of whom were civilians.
The campaign killed the Balinese rulers of Badung, their wives, and children as well as destroyed the southern Bali kingdoms of Badung and Tabanan, and weakened the kingdom of Klungkung. This was the sixth Dutch Military intervention in Bali.
8. Visit Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Temple
While at Lovina Beach, visitors also pay a visit to the magnificent Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Temple also known as Vihara Buddha Banjar. The Temple is also a tourist attraction, a place of peace, tranquility, serenity, harmony, and beauty.
The temple was founded in 1969 on an area of approximately 4 hectares and was completed one year later. Considered a hidden gem in Bali, it is located in the hills overlooking Lovina Beach, and it radiates an air of calm and peace.
It has some unusual architecture that is eye-catching. There are several Buddhist depictions and statues and an element of traditional Balinese architecture which results in a seamless and beautiful combination.
9. Enjoy the Snorkeling and Diving Sports

Apart from enjoying the beautiful scenery at Lovina Beach, visitors enjoy sports like Snorkeling and diving. Lovina beach has some of the best snorkeling in Bali.
Snorkeling is the practice of swimming on a body of water while equipped with a diving mask and a shaped breathing tube called a snorkel. In cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. The use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods with relatively little effort and to breathe while face-down at the surface.
Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime sport.
10. Explore Singsing waterfall
Singsing Waterfall is one of North Bali’s hidden treasures, which is a great option for nature lovers and those with a penchant for adventure while staying around Lovina Beach or the capital of Singaraja.
The waterfall is located up in the forested hills of the Cempaga village in Banjar, some 50km west of the town hub and main beach resort areas. Reaching the site requires a 20-minute trek on foot, starting at the rural neighborhood and along a moderate forest trail.
Singsing is a twin waterfall. The two are not high but are decently wide and look very beautiful and bigger during the rainy seasons. It’s surrounded by Rice fields and forest vegetation.
