Glenn Fredly Deviano Latuihamallo was an Indonesian R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. He entered the music industry after winning a singing contest in 1995 and released more than ten albums throughout his career.

Glenn served as a coach for The Voice Indonesia. He produced new talented artists like female vocalist Yura and male soloist Gilbert Pohan and produced the film Cahaya Dari Timur: Beta Maluku.

His music became jury favourites at the Indonesia Music Award (AMI) and Glenn amassed a total of eight awards. His R&B vibes and sultry vocals were a mainstay on national airwaves for more than 25 years and he started his music label Musikbagus in 2014.

1. Glenn Fredly Was of Moluccan Descent

Glenn was born on September 30, 1975, in Jakarta, Indonesia, to Hengky and Linda Latuihamallo. He was the firstborn in a family of five children.

He originates of Moluccan descent, an archipelago in the east of Indonesia. They are located on the Halmahera Plate within the Moluccan Sea Collision Zone.

2. Glenn Joined the Music Industry in 1995

Glenn started his music career in 1995 after he won the Cipta Pesona Bintang singing contest. The same year he joined the rock band Funk Section as a lead singer soon after graduating from high school.

In 1996 he contested in the Asia Song Festival, which was hosted by Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange. He was one of the finalists at the festival in 1998. Glenn left Funk Section to be a solo R&B singer.

3. Glenn Fredly Started his Solo R&B Journey in 1998

When Glenn left Funk Section, he felt that being a solo R&B singer Suited his vocal style better. In 1998, he released his first album GLENN, and the album was relatively well received, selling 50 thousand copies. During the release of the GLENN album, R&B was not that popular in Indonesia.

Glenn started doing well in his solo music career and 2000, he released his second album Kembali (Return), with the single “Kasih Putih” (White Love) receiving a lot of airplay in many media. He placed third in the Russian Asia Dauzy International Song Festival.

Glenn released one of his most successful albums in August 2002. The album was titled Selamat Pagi, Dunia (Good Morning, World). In total, Glenn released more than 10 albums during his music career.

4. Glenn Fredly Performed in Several Concerts During His Music Career

Glenn was one of the main performers in a tribute concert to deceased Indonesian singer Chrisye during the Java Jazz Festival in March 2009. Still, in 2009, he performed tribute concerts to Michael Jackson in five cities throughout Indonesia, covering Jackson’s hit songs.

In 2011, Glenn joined Sandhy Sondoro and Tompi to perform a set of concerts under the name Trio Lestari (The Eternal Trio).

During his 17th anniversary in the music business, he celebrated with a sold-out concert in front of 7,500 people at Istora Gelora Bung Karno on September 2, 2011.

5. Glenn Fredly Founded Musikbagus Label

Glenn strongly believed in Indonesia’s music industry’s future, so he founded the Musikbagus label in 2014. He managed to shine a light on other artists such as songwriters Yura Yunita, Gilbert Pohan, Taria Degrasia and several other young talents.

Yura Yunita got a big break at the label with her titled debut album YURA. In one of her songs, she had featured Glenn. Glen also managed to join the music group Trio Lestari since 2011, along with Sandy Sandhoro and Tompi.

6. Glenn Founded the Grenn Music Foundation

Glenn founded the Green Music Foundation (GMF) in 2009 to help the poor. He was especially interested in helping people in eastern Indonesia. Through the foundation, he helped provide clean water and electricity to people living in Waikokak village in Ende, East Nusa Tenggara.

He also showed his support for the weekly Kamisan protests held by survivors and families of past human rights abuses in front of the state palace due to the GKI Yasmin dispute in Bogor, West Java.

Glenn was invested in peace in Maluku following the bloody sectarian strife in Ambon and Tual in 1999 that killed more than 2,000 people. Glenn actively helped with human rights campaigns.

Glenn gave his credit to Michael Jackson as being one of his influences, saying that Jackson inspired him “through his music, his style, his dancing, everything.”

He also credited Jackson’s humanitarian work for inspiring his own charitable work. Glen also admired Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones and was a fan of Chrisye.

8. Glenn Fredly Entered Film Producing in 2014

In 2014, Glenn entered film production with the film Cahaya Dari Timur: Beta Maluku (Light from the East: I am Maluku), telling a story of a soccer coach trying to mend the served ties of brotherhood in the area through sports. The film received the best movie award from the Indonesia Film Festival.

His music was featured in Surat dari Praha in 2016 and he starred as a cast in Tanda Tanya and Pretty Boys in 2019.

9. Glenn Fredly Marriage

Glenn married singer Dewi Sandra, and they got married o April 3, 2006, in Uluwatu, Bali. The couple divorced after Glenn filed for divorce in 2009.

Glenn got married again on August 19, 2019, to Mutia Ayu. They had a daughter, Gewa, born on February 28, 2020. The couple stayed for seven and a half months; unfortunately, Glenn died.

10. Glenn Fredly Death was Caused by Meningitis

Glenn died on April 8, 2020, in Selia Mitra Hospital in South Jakarta at the age of 44. His death was caused by meningitis (chronic inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

Glenn was buried in Tanah Kusir Public Cemetery. His family had requested mourners not to attend the funeral due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but still, some of his fans made their way to the burial ground to pay their respect.
