Agnes Monica Muljoto, is known professionally as Agnez Mo. She was professionally known as Agnes Monica before amending her stage name. She is an Indonesian singer, songwriter, music producer, actress, dancer, model, and businesswoman.

She was born on July 1, 1986, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her parents are Jenny Siswono and Ricky Muljoto. Her mother was a professional table tennis player. Her father was a professional ace basketball player. She has a brother, Steve Muljoto, who is currently her manager.

She launched her first music album when only six years old. Agnes also hosted a children’s variety show and acted in some Indonesian soap operas. In her teenage years, she already performed in neighboring Asian countries and acted in Taiwan soap operas.

She decided to quit law school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue an international music career. She then changed her name to Agnez Mo and started launching multiple songs for the global market.

In early 2007, she was appointed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC) Far East Region as an Asian anti-drug ambassador.

In 2010 she was appointed as an ambassador of the MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) organization, which combats human trafficking.

She was recently appointed as the ambassador of Intellectual Property Rights 2012 by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights Indonesia.

 As a child, she recorded three children’s albums. Her first album, 鈥楽i Meong,鈥�  did not really impress her fans. In her second album 鈥榊ess!鈥� she collaborated with a more successful child singer, Eza Yayang. This album received more than the first. Her last album 鈥楤ala-Bala鈥�, as a child did fairly well.

As a teenager, she began her acting career with small roles in lesser-known series. In 1999, she got her breakthrough role in the soap opera 鈥楲upus Millenia.鈥� The same year, she appeared in another successful soap opera, 鈥楳r. Hologram.鈥�

Her parents, Ricky and Jenny, would鈥檝e loved to get her involved in sports but the entertainment was more of her thing. They鈥檇 bring her along with them to sports complexes but she would end up singing and dancing around the room.

They eventually enrolled her in after-school programs for singing and dancing. Eventually, young Mo entered a talent search competition and her career took off from there.

Indonesia is mostly populated by Muslims and being Christian she always felt like she was not like everyone. However, she acknowledged that the people there have accepted her for who she is.

This statement soon spawned a backlash questioning the singer’s lack of nationalism. Some accused her of defying the spirit of Indonesia’s Youth Pledge, a proclamation made by the country’s founders that all Indonesians are of one motherland, one nation, and one language.

She however highlighted how in spite of being a minority, the people looked beyond her differences and accepted her as an artist. Her appreciation of Indonesian culture is also evident in how she portrays herself in her music and videos.
