Mohammad Ahsan was born in Palembang, Indonesia on September 7, 1987. He is an Indonesian badminton player who gained fame when he won the 2013 World Championships. Ahsan went on to win again in 2015 and then came in second in 2017.
He compares to other badminton stars such as Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan. The player received his first medal at the World Championships when he won bronze in 2011.

He and men’s doubles partner Hendra Setiawan was named the Most Valuable Players of 2013 by the Badminton Association of Indonesia [PBSI].
In 2014, PBSI honoured the reigning men’s doubles world champions duo of Mohammed Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan with the Most Valuable Players (MVP) award, which came with a 1bil rupiah (RM273,866) reward in a special ceremony during the Indonesia Super League (ISL) in Surabaya.
PBSI chairman Gita Wirjawan is quoted by the Jakarta Post saying:”They (Ahsan and Hendra) are models for all of us. Anyone can become a champion. In 2012, they were ranked 50th in the world. After winning the world title (in Guangzhou 2012), they are now the world No. 1 pair.”
3. Ahsan Took Home 5 Titles in 2013

Besides the world title, Ahsan-Hendra also won five other titles last year – the Malaysian Open, Indonesian Open, Singapore Open, Japan Open and the BWF World Superseries Finals.
In one of the tournaments, the then unseeded Indonesian players thrashed all competition and ended the final match against No 2 seed Koreans Ko Hyung sun/Lee Yong dae in two games with 21-14, 21-18 which lasted 39 minutes. They received $55,300, while the South Korean players received $26,600 as a reward for runner-up.
4. Ahsan is one half of ‘the Badminton Daddies’
Ahsan and Hendra paired for the second time back in 2018 and have won several competitions since then. Their nickname is “The Daddies” because both of them have started families and often show affection towards their children.
Mohammad Ahsan’s partnership with Hendra Setiawan is so legendary that they are famous worldwide just by their nickname the Daddies.
The lethal duo have won three world titles (2013, 2015 and 2019) but returned empty-handed from the 2016 Rio Games and the Tokyo Games last year.

Ahsan made his third (previous 2012 & 2016,) appearance at the Summer Olympics in 2020 Tokyo. Partnered with Hendra Setiawan as the 2nd seed, He finished fourth after being defeated by Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the bronze medal match.
Ahsan has also appeared in many Olympic games and global top tournaments at the Summer Games alongside but, to the surprise of many, the then world champions could not make it out of their group in Rio Olympics, losing to Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa and Chai Biao/Hong Wei.
That means Ahsan’s best run came in 2012 in London when he and Bona Septano went to the quarterfinals before bowing out to second seeds Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae. Although the quarterfinals at London 2012 remains the furthest Ahsan has gone at the Olympics, he and Setiawan started among the favourites and the world No.2s had to postpone their ambitions to Tokyo 2020.

As of 2021 he was ranked 4th in the world with Hendra Setiawan. Ahsan and his former doubles partner Bona Septano were ranked as high as sixth in the BWF World Rankings. He is now paired with former Olympic gold medalist Setiawan.
He has ranked as high as number one in the Badminton World Federation. Badminton World Tour Ranking seeded him as No.2 in the men’s doubles.
7. Mohammad Ahsan is Aiming for 2024 Olympics
However, Hendra has not given up on his chase for Olympics glory and is still optimistic of qualifying for the 2024 Games. He would be 39 while Ahsan 36. The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and also known as 鶹APP 2024, is an upcoming international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024.
“Age is not on our side and there are so many young pairs who are faster and physically stronger now. But we have the experience to rely on and I want to play at the Olympics for one last time in 2024,” said Hendra after reaching the second round of the Malaysian Open.
FYI: South Korean Kim Dong-moon, who won the mixed doubles with Gil Young-ah in 1996, secured his second gold at the 2004 Athens Games through the men’s doubles with Ha Tae-Kwon. That remains the longest gap between gold medals by a shuttler at the Olympics.
8. Ahsan was Awarded Best Athlete of 2020 – Indonesia

Hendra and Mohammad Ahsan were named the best athletes of ( Best of the Best) 2020 in the Golden Award Night organized by the sports journalists division of the Indonesian Journalist Association. “Thank you for giving us the best of the best award. This motivates us to do better in the upcoming tournaments especially at the Tokyo Olympics next year, said Hendra Setiawan.
Ahsan and Setiawan could not physically attend the function due to Covid-19 restrictions but were represented by Indonesia’s men’s double coach, Henry Iman Pierngadi.
9. Mohammad Ahsan played for PB Djarum Badminton Club

PB Djarum is an Indonesian badminton club in Kudus, Central Java. The club was founded at the Djarum brak (cigarette factory) located at Jl. Bitingan Lama (now called Jl. Lukmonohadi) No. 35 in Kudus in 1969. Djarum’s CEO, Budi Hartono, encouraged the use of an on-site badminton court among his employees. A young athlete, Liem Swie King, played well, leading Budi Hartono to seriously develop the Kudus community’s activities into the PB Djarum organization.
PB Djarum’s name gained recognition when Indonesia won the Thomas Cup in 1984 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At that time, out of eight players, seven came from PB Djarum, namely, Liem Swie King, Hastomo Arbi, Hadiyanto, Hariamanto Kartono, Rudy Heryanto, Christian Hadinata, and Hadibowo.
