Lilly Singh is an open-minded woman who knows how to handle her fans both online and in real life. She took to social media to announce her sexuality in 2019. In a tweeter post, Singh posted a short message with three words; “Female, Colored, and Bisexual,” with a green tick next to each word. The post was the simplest and most comfortable way of coming out to the world.

Having an Indian background has been one of the reasons she did not come out as bisexual for the fear of being stigmatized. However, she was surprised by the support she received after making it clear that she is bisexual. According to her in the later interviews, she received a hundred supporting comments for every negative comment on her post.

The actress also encouraged everyone who has been hiding in the closet to come out without fear. Besides her checked boxes on the tweet, she explained what the three words meant to her. “Throughout my life, these have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I’m fully embracing them as my superpowers. No matter how many “boxes” you check, I encourage you to do the same,” she added on the post.

One might wonder if Lilly Singh had been secretive about her sexuality before coming out on Twitter. The truth is that Lilly Singh had always been open about her sexuality. She had informed her family and close friends that she was bisexual and everyone had made peace with her. However, she felt a sense of responsibility to let her fans around the world know who she was.

Lilly Singh took the responsibility to address the reactions she received on social media about her coming out. On her talk show A Little Late with Lilly Singh, the comedian discussed her feelings about what people had said.

Singh said that coming out as an Indian queer person was one of the scariest decisions she had made in her life. “There’s a lot of homophobia in the Indian community. When I came out, people told me that I’d lose all of my popularity, all of my fans, all of my business in India,” she said confidently on the talk show. She realized that many people in her home country did not care about who you are dating. Her businesses were never destroyed and she continued gaining more fans across the world.

According to her, sexuality is a spectrum and when she found out who she was, her spectrum shifted and everyone must understand her. She said that those who have a problem with her sexuality are entitled to their opinion but should discuss their opinion on their television shows if they have one. She is unapologetically bisexual and there is nothing a culture can do about it.
