10 Famous Indian People Who Died by Suicide


 

Suicides are personal and public tragedies that take the life of an individual prematurely. They have immediate and continuing ripple effects that affect not only the casualty of a suicide attempt but their families, friends, and communities as well.

Suicides can be caused by a variety of things, including troubles with one’s job or career, loneliness, abuse, violence, family issues, mental illnesses, alcoholism, financial loss, chronic pain, etc. Globally, almost and sometimes over 800,000 people succumb to suicides every year.

Suicide is becoming a global issue, and more so in India where the figures recorded yearly for suicides are startling. In 2021, 164,033 suicides were reported in India alone. This is a major concern not only in India but globally as well.

Despite the number being this high, it is apparent that the public is very oblivious and unaware of this dire situation. Therefore, we have prepared a list of famous Indians who have died of suicide in recent years.

1. Sushant Singh Rajput

Sushant was an Indian actor who was famous for his work in Bollywood (Hindi Cinema). He starred in several successful Bollywood films such as M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), Kedarnath (2018), and Chhichhore (2019).

Sushant Singh received several awards for his roles including a Screen Award and 3 nominations for Filmfare Awards. However, Rajput’s untimely death rocked Bollywood.

On 14th June 2020, at age 34, Rajput was found dead hanging from a ceiling fan in his Bandra house on this fateful Sunday morning.

2. Asif Basra

Asif Basra was an Indian actor who had significant roles in Bollywood films, movies, and TV series. Basra has put his creative talents to work on every role imaginable, from comic book heroes to villains.

He is well known to western audiences for his part in Outsourced. The Attacks of 26/11, The Tashkent Files, Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula, and many other movies also included him.

On 12th November 2020, 53-year-old Basra was found dead from hanging in a private complex in McLeod Ganj, in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. His death is still under investigation but the cause of death as of now is suicide.

3. Pratyusha Banerjee

Pratyusha, who played the character “Anandi” in the well-known TV series Balika Vadhu, was discovered dead in her Mumbai flat on April 1, 2016. She also participated in Season 7 of Bigg Boss. She appeared in Hum Hain Na, Sasural Simar Ka, and Gulmohar Grand in addition to Balika Vadhu.

Born in 1991, the young up-and-coming actor passed away at age 24. Asphyxia was the cause of death, per the postmortem report. Her parents claim that she was killed by her boyfriend who then faked the suicide. They have since brought forth formal charges against him.

4. Jiah Khan

Formally recognized as Nafisa Rizvi Khan, she was an English-American Actress who worked mostly on Indian films. She made a debut in the 2007 film Ram Gopal Verma and had a supporting role in Ghajini (2008) which was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year.

On Monday, June 3, 2013, at about 11:45 p.m., in a bedroom of her Juhu mansion in Mumbai, Khan reportedly killed herself by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. Her mother Rabiya and sister Kavita were not present.

Her sister discovered a six-page suicide note on June 7, 2013. According to the note, she had intended to take her own life. Khan’s family made a transcript available, and it mentioned a recent abortion.

On June 10, 2013, Suraj Pancholi, who was apparently living with Khan, was detained in connection with her suicide. Jiah Khan passed away at age 25.

5. Kuljeet Randhawa

Randhawa was an Indian model and actress born in 1976. Some of her best-known works are the TV series C.A.T.S., Special Squad, and Kohinoor.

Randhawa killed herself by hanging at her residence in the Mumbai district of Juhu on February 8, 2006. Kuljeet wrote in her suicide note that she was taking her own life because she was unable to handle the pressures of daily life.

She had wrapped up the filming of the film ‘By Chance’ just before she passed away. Kuljeet Randhawa passed away at the age of 30.

6. Guru Dutt

Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone who went by the stage name Guru Dutt was one of India’s top actors in the 1950s and 1960s. He appeared in great films like Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.

He was listed in 2010’s Top 25 Asian Actors by CNN. Guru was also a renowned film director, producer, choreographer, and writer.

He was discovered dead in his leased room on Mumbai’s Pedder Road on October 10, 1964. It was said that he combined drinks and sleeping medications. He might have overdosed accidentally or committed suicide. He had already attempted two suicide attempts.

7. Nafisa Joseph

On July 29, 2004, then 26-year-old Nafisa hanged herself in her Versova apartment. In a few weeks, she was set to wed businessman Gautam Khanduja.

Her parents claim that Joseph committed suicide as a result of her marriage breaking down and being called off. The breakdown came about when Joseph discovered that Khanduja was still married despite telling her that he had been divorced 2 years prior.

When questioned, Khanduja declined to provide the divorce documents he had previously said he had filed or responded to inquiries regarding his marital history.

8. Sameer Sharma

Sharma was an Indian TV actor born in 1976. He is famous for several roles including Shaurya Maheshwari in Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke, Brij in Jyoti, and Nitin in Dil Kya Chahta Hai.

On 5th August 2020, 44-year-old Sharma was found dead at his residence in Malad West, Mumbai on the night of 5 August 2020. His body was found hanging in the kitchen by a security guard.

No suicide note was found but on 6th August, the police said, “Looking at the body’s condition, it’s suspected that he died by hanging two days back.” Social media posts by the late actor hinted that the actor was perhaps battling depression.

9. Shikha Joshi

Shikha Joshi was an Indian actress, model, and classical dancer. On the evening of May 16th, 2015, Joshi, then 40 years of age, committed suicide by slitting her throat with a knife.

The act was done in her flat in Versova, Mumbai and she did so by making 3 small cuts and a large one on her neck. There were people present during the incident and they are; flat owner Madhu Bharti, Bharti’s boyfriend Riyaz Pathan, and friend Pushpa Parmar.

Before Joshi slit her throat, Bharti recorded her last moments where she cited Dr. Sharma and ‘many married men’ as the reason and cause for her suicide. Joshi had previously accused Dr. Sharma of sexually assaulting her during a breast exam he did on her.

10. Santhosh Jogi

Santhosh Jogi was a Malayan cinema actor and singer. He made his debut in 2004 in the movie Two-Wheeler. One of his most memorable roles was the main villain in the movie Mayavi.

Santhosh was found hanging from a fan in his friend’s flat in Thrissur, Kerala. According to police reports, Jogi’s suicide was due to family problems.
