Solheimajokull is one of the two glaciers closest to the capital. The other one is Langjokull. 4. Camping Sites on Solheimajokull

There are two camping sites around Solheimajokull which will give you a conducive environment and able to visit other neighboring adventure sites.

Skagor Campsite is a small campground situated directly next to Skogafoss Waterfall. It is best known for offering great waterfall views, outdoor sinks, and shared bathroom facilities.

The other camping is the Vik. It is a large campsite nearby downtown Vik. It offers accommodation for up to 250 people and has a bathroom and dining facilities.

The oldest glacier ice that has been found in Solheimajokull is believed to be around 4 to 600 years old. The landscape on and around the glacier keeps on changing from day to day as a result of the movement and melting of the ice.

Most glaciers are formed through a volcano eruption. For Solheimajokull the weight from snow build-up on Myrdalsjokull combined with glacier meltwater freezing and thawing puts pressure on Solheimajokull cracks it up as its weight pushes it down the valley towards Solheimasandur and the Atlantic Ocean.

Solheimajokull is said to be retreating from 1930.  It is said to have retreated at around 977 m and later the weather cooled and the glacier advanced for about 495 m until 1995 and thickened by up to 100 m.

9. Some of the Dangers of Solheimajokull

It is important to take caution when visiting Solheimajokull. It is to be noted that at the edge it looks so innocent with the black ash from Volcano Katla and Eyjafjallajokull covering a part of it and care must be made.

Entering the ice craves and the snout which is also created at the edge of the glacier tongue is hazardous and those who attempt it should be aware of the ice constantly moving and parts of the front, as well as ceilings of ice caves, collapse frequently.
